I sold some rims to a fellow from Ohio last Sunday and he pointed out that the H I bought at auction has what appears to be a shift lever on the left hand side at the front of the bell housing. Is this a M and W lever for a 9 speed? I have not driven this tractor yet as I need to install a radiator and water pump. The handle runs at an angle under the steering wheel and the knob is right of center. It enters the bell housing in the front where it looks as if it would change ratios to get more gears. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Lee

If I remember correctly the first MW's were cable and then hard linkage on the right side. Heisler's were hard linkage on the left side. Behlen's were all cable operated. The 9speed's were very popular in my area. Mostly for rotary hoeing and raking. A lot of unstyled John Deeres, M's and H's still show up at farm sales with 9 speeds

Pretty sure bet that it is a 9 spd. Might be an M&W, might be a Heisler. One of them used a set-up such as you describe, and the other one was controlled with a cable that entered the torque tube through the top of the tube. I just don't remember which was which.
