How many ears per stock of corn?

I was wondering how many ears per stock is average???? just imagine if they could make a hybrid that has 4 ears per stalk. I think it could be an answer to boosting farmers bottom line's...There chopping corn around here and just making piles in the field as the ears are so tiny. we had a drought after the corn was off to a great start, then 6 weeks of 90 plus degree heat with no rain. the best corn fields might get 80 bu per acher. lots of chopping not much shelling.

The breeders can do anything they want. But they have found that one ear/stalk is the most efficient. Corn does not compensate well for population or drought. So, the purchase the seed for the best one-eared hybrids for your location.

Here is one for you all. A field west of Clay City IN had cobs where the tassel should be and no husk just silks. No cobs on the stalk. They were spaced roughly every 20th plant.The rest of the corn looked normal. Never saw anything like it. It almost reminded me of sorghum, but with a corn cob instead of a grain head.

Bob, I found a couple of those in my corn last year. Funny looking things for sure. Haven't seen any this time. Haven't picked any yet either though.

Ear in the top is almost always on a sucker. Plant could have been broken off, cut off by cutworm etc. Give it a close look down at the bottom next time you see one.

When I was a kid in school dad bought seed corn from the FFA. I think it was PAG brand. Never seen any of it since. Every stalk of it had two good ears per stalk. Most the time one is all that makes much.

With the modern hybrids if you have two ears on a stalk your plant population is to low. More efficient to have one big ear per plant than two scrubby ones at least thats what most agronomists say around here. They do work for seed companys tho..

Hi Scott, I wonder how thick we should have planted this year, mine was 36,000 and about 1 in 4 stalks have a second good ear. All have a second ear, but most did not develope. Shelled a hopperfull today, did not make 80 rods to fill 100 bushels on 4 rows, but it is about 40% moisture. I think it is the best I have raised, we have heavy soil and were lucky to get rain. I am 20 miles SW of Rochester. Chuck

Yea, its just a big gamble. If you plant a high population and you get a cool dry season you end up with nubbins, but if everythig is perfect 40000 might work. Most corn hybrids are flex ear so they adjust the size and number of ears to conditions. The trouble with multi ear corn is the stalk and root system are not strong enough to support the extra weight so a plant that produced four ears would have to have a 2 inch thick stalk to support it and that would cause other problems with harvest, tillage ect. Chuck, how's your corn standing? Down here near Preston everyone is getting nervious because the stalks are weak and some is starting to go down. Moisture is in the 30% range so taking it now gets kinda spendy.

HI again, So far ours is standing perfect, have been worried about a high wind because it is so tall, ears are at shoulder height. Ran the head 2 ft. off the ground, guess it was the heat that made it grow so, In late June and July it was unbelivable. Will chop next week, it should really be fun, have had the 856 down in 2nd with the torque back before, wonder if it will have to hit low this year.

wow what a diffrence 50 miles can make....even further north twards cannon falls and hastings the crops were brown in july.

Hi again Jonny, We are very blessed here, and are always better off off on a dry year. I have not been around but have heard others did not get the rain and then from Plainveiw to Goodhue there is a lot of flat corn from a storm. Chuck

Hi Jonny, The idea of multiple ears went out about 50 years ago with open pollinated corn. The more ears and weight means it is harder for the stalk to stand. Also the corn plant can develope an ear at each joint, so 3 is pretty much the limit unless you try to grow 140 day corn like in Mexico. Chuck

About 1/4 of mine had 2 ears per stalk. The second ear was about half the size of the one in the picture. I am in west Ky
