Just returned home with my Cub from the Eagleville Tn Tractor show Sunday before last and did something stupid that nearly got me killed. It was pouring rain and when I got on it to start it seemed the battery was down,so I got my jumper box from the truck and went up on the trailer and hooked up the box and hit the starter,it was in reverse with about half throttle, it started instantly and dragged me off the trailer,my back was against the front axle and I was holding on for dear life, I was pushing so hard that I could hear the governer opening up.My Son in law was in the area and he ran and jerked it out of gear. I was brusied up and have a sore back and le but no broken bones, thanking the Lord I came out alive and not hurt to bad. As a seventy three year old I know better than starting a tractor with being on it. Sorry for the long post but maybe this will remind some of us to put saftey first,believe me it did me. Ed

Hi Farmer Ed. Thanks for the timely reminder about safety. I've got a Farmall M that runs on Vaporising oil(Kero/Distillate) with gas start and recently I've been in the habit of standing in front of rear wheels to start it cos it the best place to stand to turn it from petrol to Kero. Guess that makes me very much the village idiot. But never again. Sorry you got hurt mike farmer

Our tractor is much newer than that, it has a switch that the clutch depresses that has to be in before the tractor will start. The dealer retrofitted it (recall) to prevent anyone from starting it with a screwdriver, because some people were starting tractors while standing in front of the back tires. Of course, some people got run over when the tractor had been left in gear.

Most accidents happen when you are in a hurry. I'm only 3-4 years younger than you, but I grew up cranking tractors. It was drilled into my head by my dad to put it in neutral first. That lesson has remained with me -- which is a good thing, since I'm seldom sitting on the tractor when I start it.

Thank you Ed, and all the rest who posted. I just got my first Cub a week ago, and have been starting it while standing next to it, all the while thinking that starting a tractor while standing in the path of a huge tire might be a pretty stupid thing to do. You've just convinced me that this is correct. I won't do it again.

My Great Uncle was had a harrow hooked up to his fenderless Case, he went to turn and didn't relize he had caught the cable with the lug on the tire, just missed takeing his head off by very few inches. Had a neighbor who collected tractors when I was a pup, he went to start a 4010 at the starter, had it in gear and the wheels were turned toward the side he was on, ran over him and keep going in circles and just kept running over him until it ran out of fuel. Its just like when you're backing up to hitch onto an Impelment and you have someone back there (usually my dad) waiting to put the pin in, I always keep a hand ready for the ignition switch if something ever went wrong. Im sure glad you came out live!

Good to hear you made it out okay.
A couple guys almost got up at tech school first year I was up there. They were splitting a JD 4020 and neglected to take the all the suitcase weights off the front, and did not put a splitiing stand on the front before pulling the frame bolts. There was one guy standing on each side, they pulled the last bolt and went to roll it forward, than just hear this huge crash. The front end flipped down and slammed against the floor, and the frame rails just missed their heads by about 2 inches. Also had a Case 1070 flip to the side after a couple guys split it casue they didn't wedge the bolster and front axle to prevent it from doing so. Instructor sure let those guys have it.

Cranked up my 140 in 1st gear while standing in front of the platform. Was able to shove it out of gear before getting run over.

Our cub has a switch that makes contact to the wire going to the starter solenoid only when the clutch is depressed. Good safety feature. I recomend puting that setup on yours.

I've been through so many scrapes, I asked my wife once if I ever told her about the time I got run over by my own pickup truck.

She replied, "No, and I don't want to hear about it".

The one that still gives me the willies is the time in the Marine Corps when I came within a hair of going off the flight deck of an aircraft carrier under way at ten o'clock on a stormy night in the Suez Canal area. And it wasn't even my own fault. It was the stupidity of a couple of sailors.

I don't think the young Ensign that was in charge of those sailors knew what a arse chewing was until the Officer of the Deck, a Lieutenant Commander, got hold of him.

Ed, glad you weren't hurt. I done the same thing about 4 years ago. I was starting my Super C with the hand crank. It still in 1st gear and as usual it fired on the fist pull and nearly ran over me.

I"m glad you"re okay...

When I was ten I needed to help out on the farm and kicked the tailgate shut on the truck while the auger was still running... lost my right foot and will pay for it the rest of my life by being somewhat crippled up. Keep those guards in place!

Another story, had the transmission cover off a Farmall A in the garage to clean it out. Lined everything up and put it back together. Used the crank to start it up and it was locked in reverse, thank God. Tore the muffler off and scraped up the door (lucky the door was open, too). Only permanent damage is my pride, luckily.

Here"s hoping our stories of close calls will ring true in the ears of others and prevent them from taking potentially fatal short cuts!

wow sorry to here that you were injured but glad to here that theres no long turm injury my tractor is electric start and thank god ive never had the battery die.. ive had my close calls tho for example standing next to my neighbors ford 2120 while he was dogging with the back hoe and one of the outrigers caught the edge of m boot.. 1 inch one way and it would have gotten my foot..and i have crushed my foot before on an atv slid sideways fliped and my foot went right under the foot peg and it shattered my foot.. soory for the long rant anywyas glad to here your ok and may it be a speedy recover to you be safe everyone

I'm glad that you were not permanently wounded. Some years ago my uncle had a JD430 Utility(I have the tractor today) The battery box is right behind the dash and there is a spring operated plate that goes up against the side of the battery. It had a #35 loader on it also,. IN order to pull the battery out you have to depress the clutch and pull the battery out on top of it. My uncle had pulled the battery out and cleaned connections then restarted the tractor. He pushed the battery back in, releasing the clutch and the tractor moved foreward, in gear. The loader came up against something but he was caught with the wheel grinding against his hip. He eventually got away from it but suffered permanent nerve damage to the hip and spent a couple weeks in the hospital.

You're lucky, you survived with a story to tell, and you passed it on to us as a warning. I still get a creepy feeling when I think about a similar experience 20 years ago. I was sitting on the track of an old D-6 Cat, trying to get it started after lunch. I had the pony motor reved up, & in gear. With the compression release open, I engaged the clutch to start the diesel. When I did, the old Cat lurched forward with me on top of the track. It was direct drive, & I had it in gear with the clutch back. It just about got me. I'll never forget that & I think about it every time I start anything with a clutch.

I am so glad you are operational.
I bought a 1938 AC WC for 75$ Because of the owners experience.
He had parked it up 1 yard from being against an 80 hp oliver wheetland style tractor. He reached over to the floppy gear shift and (failed to) put it in Neutral. He put the crank in the hole and pulled up the half turn with perfect success. The tractor leaped forward, he pulled the crank off, but was pinned between the AC and oliver with the crank snout jambed into his ham strings pushing on the oliver's belt pulley, and spinning as the tractor spun its rear wheels into the ground. He still limps.
I bought the tractor one yard away from the oliver, and backed up out of its self dug holes, by the mans wife. Be safe, JimN
