I want to thank all of you for sending along the infoo I used to wire up my A. Now, heres the problem---

Wired up generator to VR and installed battery pos ground, starts well but generator is not chargeing as best I can tell. The VR is new and marked 6V pos grnd. However the terminals are not where they are on other regulators. The single terminal on one side is marked GEN on the other side are L Batt F.. The regulator is well grounded and I polarized the gen as I have read many times. The battery was fully charged when we started today Would that have any effect on whether the ammeter show anything or not or whether or nor it is cHarging and if so ow far down must the battery get to show charge? Had generator tested and it motored fine n so suggestions pleasse.

Simple test with engine running take a jumper hook one end to F terminal and ground to the other should show charge. If that makes it charge the reg is bad. If no charge gen is bad.

Gene----this probably sound stupid but-----F terminal on the Regulator or F terminal on the Generator. I think it would be generator but just to be sure. Henry

On the generator, though either might be OK, the one on the Gen is closer to what you are testing. Using the one on the Reg then uses the wire to the gen F term, which might be open. JimN

Even if the battery was well charged, when she starts that usually sucks enough energy from the battery that Id still expect it to draw some charge after start up. If the VR and ammeter n genny are alllll ll wired correct??? (make sure) run the checks Jim told ya about but if that fails to show the problem do a search for my complete Troubleshooting Procedure for Non Charging n that ought to help diagnose the problem.

Well all sounds correct. Bat term to amp meter term that is not connected to the battery through the starter big terminal.
F terminal to the Field (small) terminal on the gen.
Gen terminal to the generator armature terminal (big)
And the L terminal either not connected, or connected to the light switch input.
Check the actual voltage across the battery when running at 1/2 throttle. It should read 7 volts + or - .2 volts. If it is, and it stays there if you turn on the lights, you are good to go. If it is less, 6.5 or so, then while running at 1/2 throttle jumper the field terminal on the generator to ground and then check the volts. If at 7 or more, the new VR is not operating correctly. and a replacement is needed. Many electrical components are difficult to return. Many are returned reboxed and sent out as new. Argue the point that you know how to do this, and it was not working from the getgo. Good luck, JimN
