I was looking through that link to Robert Melville's wiring diagram tonight. I didn't see a diagram for an H with a 12v generator setup. Does anyone know if there is a diagram out there for that kind of setup? I will have the 12v gen, VR, 12v battery and magneto. Although I'm not sure where the VR is supposed to go, either on top of the gen or under the tank somewhere. third party image

And before anyone says anything... I'm just asking because it came to mind while reading. I am NOT rewiring this H any time soon. I just want the diagram as reference for much later on.

I used a one wire set up for the alternator for the SC. Here is the diagram I used. I think it is for a M. Ron

Mike, to add just a bit to Rustys good remarks, thetre is a minor wiring difference dependant upon if you use a 4 terminal (BAT ARM FLD LOAD) VR versus only a 3 terminal (BAT ARM FLD) cuz regardless how a tractor came new it may have been modified over the years. EITHER VR can still be made to work so post back any questions.

Where would a '44 have it mounted?

Mike, I can only make a somewhat educated guess as to the location, but my guess is that it sits on top of the generator. One other thing to point out is that the later generators were not drilled and tapped to accept the saddle mount VR, but at the same time ALL original generators were fully interchangeable on ALL Farmall Hs and Ms.

Basically there is very little difference between 6 volt and 12 volt generator systems. The one big difference is that the 12 volt uses smaller battery cables, but everything else is pretty much the same. The location of the VR is dependent on the year of the tractor. The earlier models mounted it on top of the generator, the later models had it mounted on the rear gas tank support. I have one H with the VR mounted in a "custom" location, and it works, so I'll leave it there.
