Anyone have any ideas on a differential lock for a farmall 460. I dont want to build a limited slip, I mean a real diff lock like on a JD 4020 etc. This is for the dead weight pulls we have in the area where the biggest thing is getting the pan to even budge. Will parts from any other IH fit in the 460 rearend to make a good diff lock? Any fabrication ideas? use of some kind of clutch, magnet???? etc...

If you can lock one of the side bevel gears to the inside of the differential cage, that will work. If you had four spring loaded pins riding on a yoke or collar, the collar could be moved laterally to force the pins into the bevel gear. The bevel gear is splined to the bull pinion shaft. It would have to be drilled as well as the differential cage half. On a 560, you could use the blocked off shifter opening for the linkage outlet. I'm surprised someone hasn't already done the engineering and production.

Another solution would be the bull gears themselves. Fasten a large male spline to both gears and let a female spline rest on one and slide over to the other. Internal and external gears would work as well. Lots of torque back there so it has to be beefy.

I should point out that the first option requires alot of engineering, precision machine work, and prototype testing. Without looking at the differential, it may not even be possible because the carrier bearings may get in the way.

Just bear in mind, that one of the bevel gears or bull pinion shafts has to be temporarily locked to its adjacent differential cage half.

You could also lock the large ring gear to the same side bull pinion shaft with a sliding dog clutch.

Just pull the cover off the frame and study the differential for awhile. If you like to tinker, you will figure something out. If you come up with something good, you might be able to market it. Meanwhile, get some parts books of tractors with diff locks and see how the professional do it.

OK, that's it. I'm done for awhile.
