A freind just called me and asked about the hyds on his 460. Well I don't have a book on it and have never messed with one, so I told him I'd ask you guys and get back to him. #1 he says the hyds surge but do still work, what might be causeing that??
#2 where id you check/fill the hyds??
#3 does it have a filter in the system and if so where??
Thanks

The hydraulic filter is on the right side of the clutch housing behind a hexagon cast plate. Take out the six bolts. You will get about a half gallon of oil when the plate comes loose.

My 460 gas Utility had a surging problem that turned out to be a low oil level. BUT my hydraulics, including the fast hitch are very slow. I have yet to take the seat and cover off to check the intake tube screen. Hopefully it is that and not a pump that needs rebuilding. The hyd filter is located on the right hand side of the tractor under a plate bolted right to the transmission housing. As for a level check I am unawre of one. I have searched high low for one. I have a few weeping leaks in the system and have added nearly 4 gallons. My guesstimation is that I probably have 12-13 gallons in it. I think in this case more is better than not enough.

If anyone has a method of determining how much is in the system I'd like to know too.

my 2 cents

Butch

The 460 is a descendant of the H. The level check location is similar to but not exactly like the H and is a plug on the lower left front of the transmission/hyd housing. Capacity is about 10 gallons. TA, hyd, transmission and rear end fluid is combined. Drain it to the level of the plug, it may help to change the fluid as it undoubtably has water in it. IH recommended a yearly change. All this is in the operator's manual. Additional fluid won't help.
