PTO speed question

I have a Farmall 560 with a 540 PTO. The tachometer/PTO speed indicator is missing on it.
I'm wondering if the max. speed on the PTO is
540rpm or if that can actually be significantly
exceeded at full throttle. I'm running a flail
mower that has a warning tag on the gearbox not
to exceed 540 rpm and I don't want to trash it.

Unless your tractor has been significantly altered as far as engine speed, you will be fine.

Most 540 implements are perfectly save to 600rpm and not a lot of tractors will exceed that PTO speed at full throttle.

Give "er heck!

Gary: Your 560 will reach pto 540 rpm at 1800 engine rpm. Very likely it will exceed that but not by enough to harm any 540 rpm equipment. As Allan said, the warning is for those folks who may decide to run it on a 1000 rpm pto shaft.

Ya gotta read between the lines.

That tag is actually telling you not to run it at 1,000 rpm.

Open it up, you're not going to hurt it a bit on a 540 PTO.

Under a no load condition, the tractor PTO will exceed 540 rpm. Also, the governor or the injection pump (depending on gas or diesel) can be altered for more power and more RPM. The only way to know if the RPM is set correctly is to have a working tachometer. I would guess that under no load, the tractor PTO could maybe make around 550 to 580 at wide open throttle under no heavy load. Seeing as you will be using it for something though, you shouldn't have to worry about the no load speed.
