Farmall M starter button problems - Need Help

I have a Farmall M which has been converted to a 12 volt system. The starter button went bad on the tractor so I replaced the starter button. I hooked up the wires and tried to start the tractor and the engine does not turn over and the button just smokes. The first question I have are does a Farmall M with a 12 volts system have a positive ground? I thought I might have the battery in wrong. The second question is do they make a specific starter button for the 12 volt conversions? I am puzzled at this time and any help would be appreciated.

try turning the engine by hand, the starter drive may be locked into the ring gear.

The push button must carry 500 or more amps of current. If it was replaced with an identical IH switch or quality equal, it will not matter what voltage it is using, 6 or 12, no difference. If the switch was hooked to ground instead of the starter terminal on the starter motor, it will smoke it is a dead short.
If the starter motor is shorted, jambed, or the bushings are worn and allowing the armature to drag on the field poles, it will melt the switch. Use a starter draw meter (cheap at the car store) to check amps. If the needle pegs over 600 the starter needs service. JimN

Help me out here.

The way I figure it, even though the 12v turns the engine faster, it"s not twice as fast, and the cranking load does not double, so the amperage should be somewhat more than half of 6v amperage. But then again, I"m only used to induction motors where wattage is proportional to load. Is that still true on a starter?

More volts will send more amps through the same resistance. The starter will spin faster and be less "stalled", reducing the current to a degree. So the whole may be 140% of the watts consumed on 6v. JimN

If you need to replace the starter button,I would look for a NOS. The ones that came on the tractor had contacts about 5/8in square,would last for years on 12 volt. The new ones today have 2 brass strips about 1/8in wide which gives very little contact surface and will fail easily.

With an alternator, it must be negative ground. If it is a 12 volt generator, you can have
positive or negative, depending on what voltage regulator you have. I doubt if there is any such thing as a "12 volt positive ground" regulator, though. If you use a (-) ground regulator with a (+) grounded battery, the regulator will fail sooner. There is no difference in the starter buttons.

John deere's had 12 volt positive ground. I think the 60 was one of them that I remember.

Sounds like you got them hooked up wrong. Switch them around and yes 12 volt is negative ground and 6v is positive ground. You may have to get a new switch because sometimes they weld them together when you short them out which sounds like you just did.
