I just purchased a 1942 Farmall H. The owner past away quite a few years ago and the seller could not tell me anything about the tractor. I wanted to know what type, grade, and manufacturer of oil to use. Would the stuff on the shelf at the auto parts store suffice? Thanks

I work mine hard. I use only HD SAE 30 weight in all of mine. They have ran for 50 and 60 years with this in them. I like Kendall, Wolfshead. Lots of others that are fine too. 15/40 works OK too. Shell Rotella or Delo 400 is hard to beat.

A good diesel-rated engine oil. Why? The old H has a flat-tappet cam and those like zinc in their oil. Newer gasoline rated oils do not have the zinc in them because of roller camshafts and catalytic converters. Roller cams don"t need the extra lube from zinc and it collects in/ruins catalytic converters over time.

I use Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 in my "42 H.

I go along with Andy. If you live in the cold, use 10-40. 15-40 diesel also works well. Oil is so much better now that old info is just that. JimN

They are not very picky about their oil.

I use 20w50 in worn engines and get good results and have never had trouble with detergent in an old engine.

Straight 30w and 10w30 also work well.

Usually you find the oil has not been changed in several years.

I'll tell you the beauty of these old engines.

They are low RPM, low compression, low powered (for the cubic inches), low stress, low everything. Consequently, they seem to last and run forever. Because they don't rev to the moon, make ungodly horsepower and so forth...their lubrication demands are much lower than other engines. I am not suggesting it....but you could probably pour 3 in 1 oil in the crankcase and do just fine! There are folks here who pretend to be lubrication/oil experts, I'm not in that camp...but use some common sense and select something off the shelf and your old H will do fine. Not very many of us work these old machines like they did 30-50 years ago and it's not likely you're going to hurt one playing around with it. In my old Super A, I run whatever brand is on sale when I am ready to change it. When I bought it, the oil was black as tar and probably hadn't been changed in at least 5 years and I suspect longer. Didn't seem to hurt it any. I think..I put Shell 10w-30 in it.

I don"t claim to be an expert on anything, just learning and passing on what I know like everyone else.

If you want more information from experts and more information than you can absorb in a few days" time, head on over to bobistheoilguy.com and read a few threads and FAQs.

My old Grandad, who is very squared away with his stuff and takes good care of all his equipment, believe it or not says, "If there's oil in it, it's good". I know when we woke up the M this summer for some baling my Uncle opened up the top plug, nothing, bottom plug, nothing. He tried to look surprised. Added 3 or for quarts, out to the field, never misses a beat. Amazes me with all you hear about importance of changing oil these days. Todays tolerances obviously make a big difference. He bought that M 30 years ago, got it for nothing when he bought a SH from a guy and he said take it if you can move it. Got it home, new points, and nothing since, and got used pretty good for probably 10 or 15 years. I have a feeling the oil's never been changed. With the little bit they use, and more that leaks out, just keep adding seems to work. Like I said, surprised the heck out of me when he told me that. He worked in the IH shop for 10 years too. Never knew that until a few weeks ago. Pretty humble guy, but getting older now so he'll brag some how he and his partner could O/H an M motor in under 2 hours. I get smart and tell him that's cause you had so many to O/H from not changing the oil!

I'll be keeping my oil clean, and I've even put some Lucas Oil in her cuz I love her so. She runs so smooth all you can hear is air coming off the fan! :)
