It sounds like it isn't the tractor you want in the end. Find someone that would like it and sell to them and buy the tractor you really want. That tractor is worth more to someone that wants it than you could get for it after you repair it. Just need to find that person. Since it isn't the tractor for you put an ad here so someone can enjoy it and you can get a 706. My 2 cents worth....James

One other place you might go to ask about available engine parts is here -

Link

Some of those guys seem to be able to about scrounge anything.

If you're just using the tractor briefly then want to sell it's a harder call. But a lot of people spend more money on repairs on older tractors than they spent to buy the tractor in the first place. And a lot of people think that's too much $. But it's not a good way to look at it IMO.

What you have to look at is what you'll have when you're done vs. the overall $$ you spent to get it. These older tractors, even after the repair costs, look pretty good when you look at things that way...

As I understand it, the 504 C-153 engine was a C-135 without the sleeves. I.E a sleeveless engine. I had one in a 2500 constructall backhoe. I was told that a early combine engine would fit ( 202 I think) but I found that they had a round top bell housing and mine had a roof shaped bell housing. I did see a block for sale on ebay awhile back but I don;t recall what it brought. Since they did not have replaceable sleeves, there arn;t many around. good luck finding one.

Any damage to the block or head? If not, you're still OK. Don't pay the machine shop to do this, it's a very simple engine and you can handle it with the help of a I&T manual.

Rich: This is my own opinion, tractors equipped with IPTO and factory 3 point hitch are worth restoring.

My approach with a 504 gasser, would be find an engine from a Farmall 300 or 350. Those C-153 weren't much from the day they were new, supposed to be rated around 45 hp, yet a 300 or 350 would give them one hell of a run. Couple of days ago I posted that out of 16 Farmalls, I got one lemon, yes it was the 504 gasser. I've talked with other owners the experienced the same.

Fresh out of an engine rebuild at 1,500 hours I put my 504 in the field pulling a No.60, 3x16 plow. After about 1 hour I switched to 300 with close to 12,500 hours, probably 3,000 away from it's most recent rebuild. The 300 pulled the plow much better than the 504. That was 1975 and the 504 went down the road, traded on a new tractor, and yes I got $3,000. more than I would have for the 300, simply because the 504 had 3 point hitch.

Rich: parting out a 504 is a hard call, they didn't have sleeves, thus most of those engines are reaching the end of the line as far as rebuilding. The rest of the tractor holds up very well, thus there may not be big demand for the parts, other than the engine.

A working 504 with the D-188 diesel or a more reliable gas engine is still a very usable tractor, with IPTO, 3point hitch and forward operators platform. The 300 or 350 engine will be a direct bolt up at the rear. You will probably have to modify, front engine mounts, fan shroud assembly, breather, radiator hoses, etc. Shouldn't be too bad as engine will be close in size.

Rich: I don't know the part numbers for any of these larger engines, however after 1954 all IH four cylinder gas engines had displacment cast into the block as in C-123 used in offsets 200, etc. C-135 used in 404, C-153 used in 504, C-169 used in 300 and C-175 used in 350. These numbers are cast on right side of block, as I've typed it. All these engines were sleeved except the C-153.

I think Hal pretty well nailed the reason; C-123, C-135 and C-153 are all the same block, just bored larger. The C-169 and C-175 are the same block but much heavier than the smaller block, lot more steel in them, basically the main reason why they are a better engine for 35 to 45 hp.

If you part out the thing, I would be very interested in the radiator if it is any account and the sheet metal if it in better condition than mine
