I have a 50 Cub with magneto ignition type J4. I have never changed points in one of these. How do I go about that and what is the point gap. I removed the distributor cap and see a plate to remove with two screws. My IH Cub parts book shows details of components but am wary of tearing into it without some advise.

Yeppers on 0.013 for point gap according to my owners manual.

Thanks for the quick reply. I had reviewed posts through about page 9 and saw the thread on the J4 magneto removal. Very interesting and informative. I'm guessing that I need only remove the initial plate beneath the cap, remove the rotor noting its position in the assembly then remove what the parts book calls "body, distributor, assembly" which judging from the gasket is secured with three screws. Attached to the back of it I hope to find the points and condenser. I see in the exploded view a small gear called "PINION, rotor". Any words of caution with it? Is .013" correct point gap for this?

Your points may only need to be cleaned with some 320 wet or dry. Hal
