Oil splashing out of Air Intake

Hello All,

As I am sure most of you regulars are aware I am having one heck of a time getting my 450D to run. I was playing around with it again today and the splashing that is coming out of the Air Intake is actually not gas, it is oil. Does anyone know what this could be a result of? I am seriously running out of ideas why this old girl won't fire up for me, I can get it to back fire if I cross the spark leads and it is definately burning fuel as I have exhaust coming out while I am cranking it, I just can't get it to run and stay running. Any ideas of what I should go through and check for would be greatly appreciated.

This same thing happened to my W 400 D this summer at a show. It got wet during a rain and of course would not start, so the "expert committee" took to drying it up. Only thing wrong they got the rotation wrong and wires 2 and 3 were exchanged, it blew oil out of the aircleaner and would not start, so we pulled it and started it on diesel. It stayed like that until I got it home, unloaded it and took a look, starting with the wires, changed them and it fired up immediately on gas.

I agree with Michael - this sounds exactly like you have the spark plug wires mixed up. I wouldn't touch anything else until you are absolutely certain the plug wires are correct.

If it is the same as an MD the distributor turns opposite of a gasser. Sure you have the correct firing sequence?

you have a spark plug wire crossed and the out of sequence firing is causing backfrie through the oil breather, blowing oil out as it tries to fire..check your firing order and the wires to the plugs, once you get that settles it will run..

I agree with Maark. Pull the Valve cover and look for stuck valves and such.
Does it run on diesel? if pulled for a ways? If it does this will tell all the parts to get their act together. Are the plugs correct way ugly long reach wierdOs ? if not it will not start as easily (sticker shock on the plugs will happen) Is the compression on Gas start position in the 70s to 80 psi range? If not, there is an issue with those cylinders. JimN

Thanks Jim,

How do I go about checking for stuck valves? I don't know if it will run on diesel or not if pulled, if I pull it out of my barn and can't get it running I will be really upset having to work on it in the snow. Did you mean that if I can get it to run on diesel just the movement of the engine will free up a stuck valve? And in regards to the spark plugs I did not think that there was a wrong way to put them in, they are the right plugs. My Compression is around 120 on 1,2 and, 4 and it is 105 on #3. Hope this helps clarify things a bit.

The compression readings you list are certainly good for an engine that is not running. The plug wiring info in the other posts is important. There isn't any wrong (reasonable) way to put in plugs, I was making sure they were the abnormal looking long reach plugs. intake valves must be moving if you have good compression, exhaust valves might be not opening and compression would still be indicated. A stuck valve will bend a pushrod, then it can snap shut and not open (no pushrod). Pulling the valve cover off and looking at the valve mechanism will be good enough. Pushrods not on rockers is obvious, as are broken springs and components not moving. Set the valves when you are in there (use the book to assure procedure) JimN

Maybe an Intake valve stuck open. recheck your valve clearances.

Checking Valve clearances is not something I have done before, not that I don't think I am capable of doing it. What do I need some sort of feeler guage and crank the engine and watch?
