I am restoring a Farmall A and I just finished timing the magneto. It still wouldn't start so I checked for a spark using a tester and there wasn't one. I used two different testers so I am pretty confident there isn't a spark. I also unhooked the ground switch to the magneto and tried to get a spark then and still wasn't getting one. I do hear the audible click when cylinder number 1 is suppose to fire so the impulse coupler is good. What else could be the problem? I have brand new wires and did a tune up on the magneto.

Thanks for your time!

Check the points like they said... On my B the breaker arm would stick open. Also on the B if the gap isn't set perfect it will not get a spark.

If you removed the gears did you align the letter R? There's an L on there too for the gas start diesels since the rotor on them turn CCW.

Clean the points with some 320 wet or dry. Hal

Sounds like a common mistake that the rotor is not lined up with the tower when the mag impulse fires. Just remove the mag cap and turn the engine over slow with the crank. When the rotor stops just before top dead center is the rotor lined up with the tower. You mite have to remove the screws and move the gear that turns the rotor so it lines up with the tower when the mag impulses.

Did you get both wires hooked back up to your condensor without the connectors shorting? Are both insulators where the post on your condensor passes through the body of the mag in good shaspe and in place? And is the wire from the points to the condensor good. Check if for continuity. Sometimes, also, it will chafe and wear and cauuse a short where it passes through to the condensor.

I already did that and set the points at .013 like the manual said. Maybe I did not do it correctly.

Thanks for your reply.

Points are not making electrical contact. poen the mag up & replace the points & condenser.or at least clean the points.
