My 1943 H has a two-way valve from 17ga. tank and worn bolt holes in front of the tank. I think it was equipped with the 1gal starting tank and I also know that there was a heat shield that covered the exhaust man... Every boneyard in St Paul,MN area says not seen them nor have them. Anyone have them/know of them. I'd like to try diesel with gas start/stop. Just a thought as I restore my H.

If you want to make a profit, sell them on e-bay. In the YT forums, usually people are reasonable with their pricing. I got shutters from a YT member for a very good price because he's helping me out. I'm hoping to find a heat shield and starter tank for very good deals as well.

I have never sold anything on ebay. I look through it, but thats as far as I go. I was just wondering how much they go for. Just curious thats all. I have everything that is in nice original condition. I never knew they were a hot item.

How much would anyone be willing to pay for a starter tank, shield and shutters? The shutters have one louver that is broke off at the bottom, but is in otherwise nice shape.

A true distillate actually contains some gasoline fractions, so running diesel will be a real challenge. I don"t expect that it will run very long.

Dang! I'm betting you're right. Kerosene is way too spendy for play and it is being restored but as a driver, hay rid puller etc. It's had things removed (I think the tank and shield-shutters) as the radiator has had repair and since I just fought with taking that out, I can tell you I'd not put more crap on it to fight with...hated that job!!! I did give the gas a drink of diesel though after older farmer said the valves need the lub as new gas is so dry. Guess was just a thought. Gotta buy a good compression tester too though not sure what is good/bad compression. Thanks for your insight. I know I'll have several more issues as I dig into the H! Dan

I think Diesel fuel and Distillate are fairly similar and would probably burn OK. First and foremost though, you will need a manifold with the heat control valve in working order that can be set in the hot position. You will also need radiator shutters to maintain the coolant temperature at around 200°F.
The compression ratio for distillate on the H was 4.75, kerosene 4.5, gasoline 5.9. The distillate fuel used in the Nebraska Test had an Octane rating of 37 if it is of any interest.

I had access to about 200 gals. of jet fuel once, and used it in my H successfully. The heat control valve was stuck in the mid position but that seemed to be hot enough to fully vaporise the fuel. Sid.

I'm with Mike, you are talking about running diesel in an H, correct? Assuming it still has the original engine in it, it was never made with the intention to run diesel. The starting tank is for Kerosene or distillate, again like Mike mentioned. In order to run diesel you would need more compression, probobly a different head, etc. It would never bring good results to burn diesel in that old block.

My 2 cents..... ..... .JJ

J.J.from afton, If you have tractors, I work every day in your area with Wash.Co. Sheriff's Office. Would love to see your collection. My 12 year old son and I are restoring two tractors as pennies allow with time. Hope to meet you sometime. You know where to find us at about 9am everyday, eh? Dan

Let me get this straight, you want to run diesel fuel in the H? I really don't think that is possible. But maybe I'm wrong.

Anyway, the starter tanks and more so the heat shields are rare. I see them on ebay occasionally and they bring top dollar. I haven't been able to find them in a salvage yard yet. I'm going to a new one an hour south of me to look there tomorrow.
Unless you are restoring for show like I am I wouldn't worry about it... except that you want to run diesel fuel...
again, I don't think that is possible. Or did you mean Distillate? Which isn't around any more. Or maybe Kerosene?
