Gasket question

I am replacing the oil pan gasket, the water jacket gasket, and maybe a gasket on top of the bolster (if that exsists). My question:

Do these gaskets require some sort of sealant, or do I just put them on and tighten them down? If they do require a sealant, what do I use?

Just put them on without sealer , but make sure both surfaces are very clean!. sealer sometimes creates problems. On the water jacket gasket, you may have to use a VERY thin coat of sealer if the gasket surface is pitted. If stuff squishes out when you tighten it you used too much and it could clog a tube or two in the radiator. If it comes out on the outside, it will squish out on the inside also.

If you want to you could but a little black silicon to hold the gasket in place while getting things lined up. Helps a lot from gasket going everywhere.

And if you do use sealer, think about which side of the joint you put it on. I generally like to put it on the removable piece so it is easier to scrape, unless some temperature is involved which may cause the gasket to stick to the stationary piece. A gasket glued to the pan and stuck to the block is really stuck.
