Farmall H Valve Springs?

My Farmall H is still not running properly. I replaced the pistons/sleeves w/ a NOS kit. Also had the head totally rebuilt. I show an even 88 lbs of compression on all 4. I am a little concerned though, that my valve springs are incorrect. I can push them in by hand with about 10 - 15 lbs of pressure. I have never been able to do this on any other machines of any type. Do you think this is a problem, or am I grasping at straws? The tractor fires right up and stays running just fine, but won't idle smoothly. It smooths out when under a load, like driving uphill. I have eliminated the carb, manifold, distributor/timing, and just finished cleaning the lifters. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Sorry for such a long post...

Being able to open the valves on an H head by hand pressure is not unusual even with the correct valves. Check the installed height to know for sure if you have the right valves for your head.

If you can get the plug out of the manifold above the carb you can install a vacuum gauge there. That will show if you have a valve problem.

I agree with Cowman - you need to check the part number of the valves and the casting number of the head.

I know when I rebuild my H there were two or three different sets of valves, depending on which head was used. Still wish I would have spent a few more bucks to get a gasoline head instead of that low-compression distillate head... grrrr.

Cowman is on to a possibility. To check the valves, check the installed height there is about a quarter inch difference. The manual will show the distance.
Another check to make is the advance springs in the distributor. if they are weak or broken, the timing will be wrong at running speeds but seem correct at static timing!
Another check is for vacuum leaks. use a propane torch with the burner taken off to provide fuel all around the intake manifold, (even into the intake air) to see if it changes the idle. If it does, it locates air leaks. JimN

The springs are fine. Somebody sold you the wrong valves. Gasoline valves are longer and will not work in a kerosene or distilate head.
