While loading a tractor on Monday evening a guy next door asked if I might be interested in an old I.H. he has? It is a 650 Diesel complete except for the original starter tank. Sheet metal and emblems are near perfect and has two sets of rear weights. Tractor has not run in 5 years and has a Montana cab (rear door) mounted on it. I turned the motor over with a crank and seemed good in the gas mode and seemed to have good compression. But I realize that there is a risk involved with buying a non running tractor and could end up being scrap material or for parts. He was thinking 500 dollars the way it sets. Should I take a chance? Were these pretty good horses in their time? What else should I be checking for? Thanks Migraine

If I were you I would be going right over with cash in hand to snatch that one up.

Even if the only good part of the tractor is the head - that"s probably worth $1000 to someone!

The simple things for those engines are hard to find, such as main and rod bearings. And when you do find them, they are spendy!

Buy it. You can part it out and probably double your money.

migraine, I bought a 450 in the same shape and had it running within the hour. The 650 is fairly rare and a bargain at 500 bucks. Would like to have it myself.

Hi Migraine, That would be a real buy, it is worth more than that for scrap. They are a real horse, about 80 of them. If you don't take it let me now where it is. Chuck

Are the injectors the same as in a WD-9? I have 4 supposedly good ones from a 9 setting in the shop in case the 650 ones are not good. Are the air cleaner tops the same as well? Thanks Migraine

I believe I remember reading that the injectors for the maybe the SWD9, for sure the 600 and 650, are different(upgraded for more HP) than the WD-9. The WD-9 ones would physically fit in the head but not flow as well. Same deal with the injection pumps.

If by the "air cleaner top" you mean the breather cap that's above the hood, most pics of restored 650's I've seen have the plastic bowl type like the 560's had. Mine has the glass jar type(with a little green JD tractor in the jar). WD-9's could either have the glass jar or the mesh breather type I think. They'll all "work" as long as they're the right size for the tube, which is bigger than an M.

I bought my 650D for $300. It was stuck and had been sitting for quite a while. Had it running the same day I got it home. If you get this one and for some reason it's beyond repair, I'd sure be willing to buy the "650" emblems off each side of the hood. I'd pay a pretty good price for them too!

Hi Migraine, The injectors were changed sometime between the WD9 and the 650. I am not an expert but remember a mechanic telling me this. I would not see that as a big concern, because some had head problems with these a lot of heads have been interchanged. A WD9 head will fit on a 650 or vice-versa, so check the head to make sure which you have. These injectors seldom cause trouble and are reasonable to repair. I would guess they have the same air cleaner. Good luck, Chuck
