I have a belt pulley for a F-12 that has a crack in one spoke. Is this safe to put on the tractor this way? Thank-you, Phil

Back in the 40s when F-12s were popular, "they" said it wasn't a good idea to run with the pulley on all the time, because it could be rough on the shaft bearing. You know about "they"--rumors that get around, and we never knew where they came from. Anyhow, there might be some wisdom in that.
As far as the crack goes, that's a heavy pulley and I'd expect a fair amount of centrifugal force. I'd hate to be anywhere nearby, or even on the seat, if any part of the thing flew off.
Never had the problem, so I'd go with the advice of the fellows here who have.

I believe the deal about removing the belt pulley for field work was in the factory book. It applied mostly for the 10-20 which could have the pulley shut down and the pulley being heavy could brinnell the bearings if the tractor was on rough ground. I have a factory cover for the pulley shaft on my F-12. The belt pulley is in the furnace room because it has to stop when shifting and I wore a hole in my shoe stopping it for shifts.

There may not be much difference in 'for show' or 'for use' in that the belt pulley on the F-12 and F-14 does not have its own clutch, the pulley is on the driving shaft of the gear box and is therefore running any time the tractor clutch is engaged.

It might be able to be used that way if you are using the pulley just for looks, but I would not recommend it. It would be fine if you weld the crack in it. Many of those pulley spokes have been broken, but they will work if you weld them.

I had the same issue. Welded it up and ran it. Haven't had the chance to actually belt it up to anything yet, but at the RPM we're talking about (800-850) as long as the weld was done properly, I don't believe I'd worry about it.

I would say no, just because the centrifugal force could cause a distortion and pose a safety hazard. Unless you aren't actually using the pulley, and it's just for show.

Could you do me a favor and look at the part number of that pulley? I'm trying to see what pulley I may have.
