Hi all,

I picked up a Fram 136A for my 1950 M. I was wondering, what do you all think about Fram filters. Do they have the quality that other filters do?

Thanks, Andy

GO to your local CaseIH dealer and pick up a filter there. FRAM IS BAD!!! I take all my oil filters apart and find Fram is just using a king of cardboard. the only engines that have Fram filter at my house are my SM and 8N. but next year I plan to buy higher quality filters to protect my equipment. I like the Fleetguard LF 584 for my MV tractor.
The genuine IH filters come from the same factory if you examine them closely. They cost due to the IH emblem on the filter paperhousing 4 times as much.Waste of money....
By the way the H is LF 618(small) and MD LF 585.
All others are available form Fleetguard..
See also fleetguard.com About quality I guess they are all in same level??

Doesn't anybody use filters from IH? I've always used the ones from IH, Case IH. It says in the manual "Remeber, always use genuine IH parts". I've never had a filter related problem.

I work at an autoparts store and we deal with ford, chevy, dodge, dealers and ford dealership out here said that they have replaced 4 motors due to fram filters...they media is breaking up and goin thro the motor...just to let you know it is happening on the new ford powerstrokes...wix is the best in my opinion...they have came a long way in the last 10years or so...where fram has went downhill...

Wow, thanks for all the answers. I guess everyone has a bit of a different opinion, some good, some bad. Let me ask you all this... No one commented on Amsoil products, any opinions there?

Thanks, Andy

Ive got my opinions of them, but Im not going to post them. I will say that since this post is oil flters, they dont make their own filters.

Had one bad experience with Fram and never used them again. Bought a new Chev PU in 92 with a 350 and was experiencing a knock at startup. Asked the dealer and he asked what filter I used. I told him I always used Fram. He advised me to get the Fram off of it and do not use them and the problem will probably go away. It did and that was my last Fram. Oil draining back into the crankcase and knock was basically dry start on every fire up. Of course you probably would not have this issue with a filter mounted bottom up. Mine was mounted on it's side on my 4x4 pickup. Some may cringe, but I use Super Tech filters on everything including my diesel tractor with the exception of odd filters I cannot get and I use Napa (Wix). I will admit the Wal-Mart filters quality went downhill recently, but they were good quality till recently.

A few years ago I bought a new Dodge 2500 with the great little Cummins diesel. (still have it, 300k & runs like new) the dealer told me to NEVER use a Fram filter in it. They had one in the shop at the moment, and knew of several others that lost engines from the filter media breaking up under the impulses from cold oil being forced into the filter at start up. The small bits of stuff were clogging the piston cooling nozzles & oil passages under the rings. I"ve used Fleetguard from the start, a Cummins company. Wix & Baldwin are good too. Go to a truckstop or large equipment dealer & see if they use Fram filters on anything.

Dodge had a TSB on Wix filters (Napa, CarQuest). The TSB said do not use Wix The way the filter is put together the are small pieces of the anti-drain back valve on the clean side of filter and the can and will plug the piston coolers causing engine failure.

I bought a 2007 Chevy 3/4 ton last October 30th. I tow boats and other stuff cross country and have 170,000 miles on that vehicle now. I've always used Frams. I've done nothing but change the oil and, air filter once, and haven't had a single problem, including the filter. Don't know how much difference there is between car and tractor filters.

Still have the original brake pads, over 3/4 left. Just changed tires at 130K. Best darned vehicle I've ever owned. A little underpowered with a 4.8 V8, but how can you not be pleased with that many miles and not one failure anywhere. (Looking for some wood to knock on). Granted, all highway miles isn't as hard as in town, but still.

Those guys buying all those Toyota and Nissan trucks really bug me. That's been the only thing keeping GM/Ford/Chrysler alive. Every foreign truck comes right out of an American family's pocket. I don't care how good people say they are. I guess I'm just old fashioned.

Hopefully all this trouble with Chi-Comm products will help American manufacturing.

B

I'm glad you have had good luck with your Chevy pickup, I've always liked the body style and interior of the Chevy... along with the engines and transmissions. Unfortunately I just could never find a Chevy dealer I could get along with, seemed like they never wanted to take a Ford in on trade for one of their precious Chevy pickups...

Anyway, for the sake of conversation, do you have the original window sticker for your pickup? I'm just wondering what it says % wise for USA content vs foreign content. I know when looking at new Fords a while back the engine was made in Germany and the transmission in France, but assembled in the US.

FWIW, Toyota and other so-called "foreign" manufacturers are building new plants in the U.S. while other so-called "American" brands are laying off workers and closing down plants. That is not to say that sometime in the future other manufacturers will be doing the same, but for now this is what I've noticed.

I prefer AC filters.

I hope I don"t step over the political line and get deleted, but I just can"t let this go by.

There is an interesting thing about the new domestics. IE the Korean and Japanese vehicles, is that they are still designed, engineered and the mfg is piloted in Japan or Korea before it is sent to the US. Their executives and management is based in Japan. It will be a cold day in .... before you see an American in a position of great power in any one of these firms.

They still have their Kieretsu partners, Er...I mean suppliers, which they may partially own a portion of and most domestic auto suppliers find it difficult to get business with the new domestics since they are already comfortable with there existing partners which they brought with them from wherever they came from.

Let"s talk about content. Yeah the domestics may buy a portion of their parts from LCC (low cost countries) in order to level the playing field. High costs whether it"s labor, materials, retiree benefits or healthcare force these kinds of decisions.

Am I biased towards the US auto industry? Heck yes. Mainly because it put food on my table as well as about 1 out of every 13 Americans" tables.

Whew....I feel better.

I used Fram for a while and experienced lifter rattle on start up because their anti-drainback valves aren't the best.

Fleetguard and Wix are my top choices.

I never had problems with them. What people are refering to as them coming apart was on racecars and the like, which they werent designed for. I used a couple in my M, in fact I think one has one it in now. I usually use Wix or Motorcraft in my truck, and Wix in my tractors, because I hate going into Wally world to ge ta Farm, but my wifes car usually has a Fram on it, since one of the places she gets her oil changed uses Fram. She goes about 10000 miles on an oi change(Different subject all togther) but have never had a filter failure.

I'll chime in here- had only bad luck with FRAM too. WIX is the best in my opinion. Some of the NAPA Gold filters are just re-numbered WIX filters, by the way. Had good luck with the NAPA Gold filters before another local parts house started carrying WIX. Also never had a problem with AC or Baldwin. Be interesting to find out if someone knew where all the different brands were made- how many are really the same filter just with different paint jobs and labels on them...

The Milwaukee School of Engineering used to test motor oil filters commonly used on cars, and the Fram filters were always the best. That was a few years ago, and things could have changed. I have used them for years with no problems.

I know guys in the auto business long time(rebuilding, salvage, maintence, and so on)that refuse to use Fram filters because, believe it or not, they say they are too good. They not only remove the bad stuff, they are remove some of the good stuff in the oil.

Disclaimer: Don't use them never have. Always used Wix or Purolator. Good service out of either one.

Hi Andy: The engineer report I read a few years ago rated Fram as the worst. It would break down internally after some use due to cheap construction inside. ...but they put about the best paint job on the outside as anyone can. I'll dig out that report later this weekend when I should be getting some free time due to more unwelcome rain. agpilot
