Correct me in I'm wrong

Correct me in I'm wrong. The 560 narrow front is about 2 inches shorter than the M narrow front. It also has different spindles that the cast iron M wheels will not fit onto. I need to bring the front end of my 560 loader tractor down for the loader to work properly.

Anyone have a 560 narrow front they want to part with? Trade? I'm in Mid MN.

Thanks,

Mark

The loader bottoms out too easily on the down stroke.

The tricycle front is the same length. There are some diferences but the length is the same M, SM, 400, 450, 706, 806, etc.

Hey Mark, could you put a smaller tire size on? Maybe that would be cheaper/faster?

P.S.

Did you ever see my SM 2-71? That's the wide front I had on my 560 loader tractor (Schwartz) I thought it looked better on my play tractor than my work tractor! LOL

That was me! I sure am ugly ain't I? LOL I kind of attracted a crowd when I had it on the dyno. (64HP) Not to bad for 142 cubic inches. Did you see me pull? Almelund is getting to be a pretty darn good show isn't it? They sure do a nice job there.

yeah i was in the crowd around the dyno when you pulled up to it. like i said that thing sure sounds wicked. I also saw you pull too. i pulled in 6000 with my stock M. didn't do all that great but had fun anyways. Almelund is one of the best around my area. don't know where you are from but i'm from Amery WI. love your tractor. Where did you find that engine? i once thought about making a mod M with a 350 or 454 in it but just don't have the funds. DF in WI

"Where did you find that engine?"

It was in an old crane. A lot of them were used in gen sets on railroad cabooses. They have been changed out over the last few years and there are a few around because of that. They don't have many parts in common with the other GM diesels so some parts are getting tough/expensive to get while others are still dirt cheap. I'm at Almelund every year every day of the event. Say hi next year. I'm about 25 miles NW of Cambridge, MN myself.

Yea Almelund is getting to be a pretty darn good show and I go to a lot of them. It's getting better every year and it's a good crowd of people too.

That's real nice Mark, I'd think of doing something like that to my M if I could make it have a live pto. Especially since it's developing an oil leak, maybe the rear main.

Thanks, It should look a lot better when I paint it someday and have a custom "SGM" sticker made up for it. I'm just concentrating on all the mechanical stuff now. I've rebuilt about everything on it and replaced every seal by now. Other than the tranny everything is rebuilt on it.

You could find an M&W live clutch for your for live PTO. But, by the time you paid for one and installed it you may as well just buy another tractor.

I have a 560 narrow front outside off the tractor that I will measure for you right now if you want me to.

If I had my M here I would compare all the different parts of it for you, but it is about 2 hours away back on the farm.

Nope, I've got a M narrow front on it now and that limits you to using the cast iron wheels and that limits you to using 16 inch rubber. I need to drop the front end at least 2-3 inches. I'm thinking a correct 560 narrow front with 7.5 x 15 rubber. Of course this is assuming I'm correct on the 560 narrow front being shorter.

Mark: If you go to a good bearing shop, they can come up with a bearing set to match M cast wheels to a 560 axle, or the 560 hubs for pressed steel wheels to to an M axle.

I won't need to go down that road if a 560 front end is shorter. Is it?

Mark: I can't answer the question about narrow front length. We had an H, 300 and SM all with narrow front. The H has been gone for 50 years, 300 gone for 30 years and I only owned the SM about two weeks in late 60s. My 560 and 656 both had wide fronts. Basically the topic never came up and since I only had wide front for 560, I would not have had anything to compare.

When one thinks about this why would the M, SM, 450 or 560 be any different. All had basically the same chassis and everytime IH increased the rear tire size they also increased the front tire size. Using that reasoning, I cant see why the narrow front from the first M in 1939 would be a different length from the last 656, 666 or 686 that was equipped with narrow front. I suspect they all had the same physical measurments.

Well I do know that Schwartz makes a wide front specifically for the 560. The front spindles are shorter. I believe the 560 IH factory wide fronts are the same way. I think that's why you see so many 560's that squat to the rear with 15.5 x 38's. They have a taller incorrect front end on. Maybe you could also get them both ways from Schwartz, I don't know. I do know that the plate that the narrow front bolts up to on my 560 hangs roughly 2 inches lower than the mounting plate on my SM measured below the frame rails. I there for assume the original 560 narrow front is shorter also.

Not sure if this will help you, but I just went from the factory narrow front to a Schwartz wide front and it didn't change the height of the front end of my tractor at all. It still sits level, front to back with 15.5 x 38's on it.
