I have a 1953 Super M with a RED and White paint scheme to it. When Looking at pictures on the various web sites I do not see this repeated. At the end of the Super M's plate numbers is an empty space and then the letter J. Any help as to what this paint scheme is about...its all orginal paint. The tractor is red except for part of the front sheet grill and the lower part of the removable middle sheet metal. Scratching my head????

Curious: How do you know it's "all original" paint?

If the guy that sold it to you told you this, what else did he LIE about?

The only white that's supposed to be on a Super M is in the decals. Super Ms were painted all red from stem to stern. Everything except the tires and rear rims.

It's one thing to do a custom paint scheme. It's another thing to lie about it being "original."

That explains the "M" I can across years ago at a neighbor's farm. It was re-painted that way to sell because it was 3 years old in a dealers lot. Thanks, now I know why it wasn't a normal paint scheme.

It's not all original paint because yours is a 53, white was not used until 1956. Unless the dealer just could not sell that tractor and repainted it after 3 years to get it sold. In any case it did not come from the factory that way.

The tractor in question has been this way for as long as I can remember. Belonged to my Uncle. If while he was farming with it in the early 50's and did some bad damage to the grill and the top sheet metal, and if he was to replace that grill and mid-section with new componets for a Super M...would the dealer have sold him the new version of the white/red painted sheet metal you mentioned starting 1956????

The Super M was never red and white from the factory, the 450 was. As Jim said the 450 sheet metal will not fit, except for possibly the grille with some modification, not sure. Bottom line is your M was NOT red and white from the factory. This is not just what someone told me, or what I read on this forum. I was 14 (my dad had Farmalls) when your tractor was built, so I actually saw new 1952 M's.

Make that 15 in 1953.

The sheet metal, and grill from all red/white tractors were not at all similar. There was only the 450 in a similar size, and no interchangeable sheet metal is involved. If there was metal replaced, it was painted (possibly at the dealer) to match the dealer painted original. JimN

The answers bel;ow are correct.
Some dealers repainted parts of their inventory (or used tractors) to look modern The white first appeared on the X50 number series.
Ms etal were painted with axles, distributors, steering wheels, some tags and plates of info, and amp gauge lense covered up, then sprayed everywhere with red, belts hoses and all. Not profoundly detailed. JimN

All red. The J only means it has a Rockford clutch in it.

Paint it the way YOU want it. Whatever flips your skirt.

Dad had to get a new front wheel for our 460 and it was white. He liked that so he painted the other wheel white. I think it looks better than the red front wheels.

All where painted all red from the factory.

Had to be repainted somewhere along the way.

But if you like the white on it, repaint it the same way.

Its your tractor you can do as you wish.
