I do not know that gear particularly, but many had roller bearings on a straight axle. The end play was taken up by a thrust washer on both inside and out. Many had slotted nuts on the spindle threads to allow adjustment. I would suggest taking one apart to see the condition of the thrust washers. Some were steel, some were brass. There should be about .005 to .007 end play in the hub on the bearing. If there are tapered rollers, they should be tightened so that all clearance is gone, then just a bit tighter (no more than 1/6 turn. use Mobile1 synthetic grease, or Ford spec graphite based chassis and wheel bearing grease to assemble, JimN

Thanks Jim. It does have two large straight roller bearings on each axle with what appears to be a shim on the inside and outside. It sounds as though I am missing the thrust washers needed to take up the slack. I will try and find some large thrust washers . Again thanks for the info. Dan.
