I was told by my "Farmall" mechanic that my hydraulic unit needed a "kit" or rebuild. The rear lift wasn't working properly. It would lift a heavy disk once or twice cold, but when the fluid heated up, it wouldn't. The man came and got the tractor, calling me later to tell me that he had the unit torn down, and there were metal shavings inside, so I must need the pump, too. He quoted a fix of 500.00 for the unit, and another 500.00 for the pump. He then started trying to buy the tractor and equipment, which I sold all for 2500.00(disk, 2-bottom plow, Tillis tool(all quick-connect). This tractor was a '62 model, and in extra good condition, with very little "wear" that you see in most, but I had spent enough money that these new repair costs "were the straw that broke the camel's back. I REALLY think this guy was pulling a fast one, because he had always tried to buy my 140 when I saw him. Personally, I think the pump was still ok, and I only needed the hydro unit fixed. When I finally agreed to sell, he made a flying trip to my house with cash in hand.

Tab: Why didn't you talk to us first? Amoung us we could have told you exactly what was wrong before your mechanic friend ever turned a wrench. Mightened have helped, but at least you would have had the advantage of him having to make his offer without looking inside.

COnsidering it is a "late" model, the price for all that may be 500-1000 low. The kit for the unit under the gas tank is about $100, it is not hard to tear down and fix. I do question the "metal" shavings in the oil and the need for a pump. He will probably pay for the kit -- then he has a like new tractor to sell for more than you paid him. But, if you are satisfied, it's all ok.

Well, I should have consulted you guys first. I put too much "trust" in this guy. He basically convinced me that it was going to be very costly to fix, knowing that he wanted the tractor and equipment, anyway. have any of you ever heard of metal shavings in the unit under the gas tank? Everybody had told me that this guy "walked on water" when it came to Farmalls. But, there was always something about his demeanor that struck me as being a little crooked(even though he claims to be a big, church going Christian). If he did "get me", he will pay for it one day...

Oh, by the way, if any of you folks are down near Norlina, NC, and have a Farmall problem, I would suggest keep going until you get to another town. If they don't want your tractor, you may be OK. If they do,..... ....might be costly.

Tab: Your taking this rather well, glad to hear that. About your mechanic friend, my dad always said, "it's a short road that has no turns".

Thanks. I may be happy with my new, dirty, greasy, well-used Cub. At least the hydraulics on it work great, with no hiccups or problems. I did get one of those big, disk plows(that nobody uses anymore), a scycle mower, disk, cultivators, drawbar, and snow plow. Motor runs very good on it, with good oil pressure. The brakes are almost gone, though. Thanks, guys...Tab
