How do you remove the lower front bolster?

Before anyone yells, let me explain:

The guy who has the wheelset has been looking for a single front end for an H. He also happens to have a battery box that is practically new. I told him I was interested in the battery box, since they are close to $100 new. I told him if he was interested in the front end he could just take a fair price off the wheels. So, he said he'd give me the wheels AND battery box for $450 + front end.
He'd like to pick up the front end soon. Well, he's been patient with me (over a year) so I told him he could pick up the front end when he wanted. So, I have to jack up the front and cradle it securely. I'm going to have to tractor club folks help me with that.
I'd like to know the correct way to pull that front end off. I see 4 bolts, but something tells me it isn't THAT easy considering the steering.

Mike, Ya did ok. You got something you needed and he gets something he needs. The money sounds ok as well. Measure the cast centers before finalizing the deal and make sure they will fit .

How do you figure? The tires on his wheelset are at least 70-80%. The rims are new. Plus the casts, all from a show tractor. Those tires new are $350. Used in that condition probably $200 easy. The rims new are $150-200. $100 for used. So I figure with the casts that's a grand that he wants $500 for. His battery box is new with fresh paint. $100 on ebay after shipping. My single front end is in ok shape. The tire is old and weather cracked. At BEST I could get $100 for it. He's giving me the wheelset and the battery box for $450+ the single front end. Sure sounds like a good deal to me.
How are you seeing it different?

Mike I think Farmall dude is thinking you are trading a narrow front wheel set for the single front wheel on yours. The deal for the two rear wheels rims and tires, plus the B box, in exchange for 450+ your single front wheel is just fine! JimN

Thank you Jim... You hit the nail on the head... I feel much better, now... The last I read, Mike was trading his single front for a tricycle... I been going NUTS thinking 600 X 16 tires cost $350.00, LOL.... I bought a new set, of L-S Lug rear John Deere (B?)12.4 X 38 tires and rims, and put them on my H. Paid $300! Yes, those RIMS had to be painted. ;>)

Jim, I meant to say narrow front wheel set, not tricycle.... Some people say tricycle tho, when comparing them to a W/F.

On a SMTA, the four bolts on the bolster steering shaft are not interchangeable between the narrow and wide. The narrow front bolts are 1/2 longer.

I imagine the same circumstance applies to the H. Keep the bolts and front ends together.

You will have to turn the steering to get a wrench on the bolt heads. Plus you will also have to turn the steering to get the bolts out.

In the 50's we changed the NF and SF on my dad's H a couple of times a year (cultivation vs tillage) using the same bolts. Meaning that the NF bolts, if different, fit the SF. I don't know about the other way around.

When I had to do quite a bit of work to a larger tractor, I jacked it up with a hydraulic jack under the center behind the motor and then mounted tall implement jacks on each side frame to stabilize it. Just make sure you break the 4 bolts loose before you jack it up. Lee

Hey Mike, I've been away from this site for quite a while and see that you need a narrow front end for your "H".

Mike, Knowing that you have a small boy please make sure you block the tractor safely.

Also if the bolster that is on your tractor has the tapered spacer (as some call it) you may want to hang on to it for the narrow front that you plan to install.

Have you been able to locate a narrow front yet?

MAKE SURE that the tractor is securely on a support of the safest kind. overkill the watchword. Be very careful. remember the old saying prop twice loosen once. Stay CLEAR! CC
