When my H was restored some time ago, they decided for whatever reason to not include a water temp gauge. Where that guage should be is the Amp meter. Now, the amp meter should be in the light control box, but this tractor doesn't have one... yet. I'm getting one soon from a junk yard, along with the correct starting switch and a host of other parts. But anyway...

I've heard people talk about running the tractor up to operating temp to clean out the water system with some flush, and clean out the oil system, etc etc. But how am I going to do that without the water temp gauge? Eventually I'm going to replace all 3 gauges with correct IHC gauges, and rewire the tractor. But first I just wanted to have it running and collect the parts I need.
Will it be ok to run it without water temp gauge, or should I rewire it now so I can put the water temp gauge in there?

If you don't want to make it "correct" yet, buy a gauge, screw the sensor into the hole in the head, and leave the gauge hanging anywhere you want while flushing the engine (the gauge tube is stiff) When you get the gauge, you may have to get the correct pipe fittings for the hole in the head -- it likely has a plug in it. I have an unpressurized H with a piece of wood in that hole. Obviously, I haven't started on that tractor yet.

Yes I know. I guess I didn't explain it well enough. The amp meter sits where the water gauge should go. So I'd have to rewire, or at least reroute to move the amp meter.

Another thought was the cost of a water temp gauge. I guess I could try to find something usable and cheap at the junk yard until I get my new set.

Just stick a candy thermometer in the radiator when running to see the temp while warming it up if you feel the need. Or, just fill it with the flush and go make a few rounds plowing and it will be up to temp very soon.

I would get a gauge in there some time pretty soon. It would be a shame to cook the engine if the something goes wrong.

I just wanted to point out--a thermometer made out of candy won't hold up very well. Don't leave it sitting in your radiator for any length of time.

mike. just to get you thinking more. the early gas powered h's and m's didn't come with a temperature gauge. they were optional. they had a sheet metal piece to cover the hole in the hood for the gauge. last year i bought an m like this at a farm sale. it was a very original tractor. it was only the sercond one that i have seen like it.

Wardner is right, you could buy you a gague, hook it up and hold it in your hand to check the temp. Then put it back in the box till you are ready for it.

It will run without any gauges. I'd go to a auto parts store and get the three pack for around $30.00 . Oil pressure/ Temperature/ Volt meter. Not correct but practical to check things out. Have you got it running yet? I've stumbled upon a Ford 8N and been getting it ready to bush hog this week. Runs like a sewing machine. BUT I miss the live hydraulics of my IH 240. David.

The water temp guage is not electrical. It's mechanical. Go get one. Good repros are widely available. You will need it eventually.
