Farmall M....knocking noise from engine area. Oil was down 4+ quarts....refilled oil and obvious noise did not go away. Informed it has been knocking for awhile. What most likely has happened? What would be the most appropiate step(s) to take to verify? And possible solution. Oh, and what type of expenses ..range...do you think this will fall into?
thanks
ps. "Knock-knock?" "who's there?" "I don't know, thought you might tell me."

One other thought=-- Have you had the valve cover off to look at the upper head area? Could be a valve out of adjustment or a pushrod jumped out of it's socket. If one of the valves isn't opening or not opening all the way, you'd be getting noise from that particular cylinder. Not likely, but easy to check.

Before doing internal work, check for a loose flywheel/ pressure plate/ clutch disc thing. Also look into the front pulley/ water pump area. This is easier to check than tearing into the engine.

It's possible you might luck out, if this's the M that holds 8 qts; down 4 would still leave 4, or 4- if down 4+ (4+= how much?). It wouldn't be the first time low oil churned up some crud and maybe stopped up an oil hole for a rod or something else without messing up the rest of the stuff. Scott's check is easy to try. You said filled with oil and knock still there, but had supposedly been knocking for awhile (how long? before oil got low?). Is knock audible while: idling? pulling? revving engine slightly in neutral, or when slacking off hard pull?? But don't get your hopes up; most likely it's something expensive.

With the oil level down 4 quarts and an engine with a knock sounds like the engine will need a complete rebuild. Hal

If you are a good mechanic, and can do the repair of the engine yourself, the knock makes a 2000$ spiffy M with great tires and great paint with a nice drawbar and good electrics worth $900. It is not reasonable to assume it will live. If the owner allows a valve adjustment (with his gasket) and it does not cure the noise, it is a $900 tractor. JimN

Could be many things. The question is whether low oil caused it. Depends on the type of noise and where exactly it's coming from. A rod bearing is usually a deeper knock than say a lifter. Run the engine and pull 1 plug wire at a time and see if any of them make the noise stop. Sometimes by doing this, if it's a rod, the noise will stop when pressure is taken off the bearing. As for repair, if this is what it is, it requires a total engine tear down, crankshaft grind and over size bearings. Plus all the other things that are required with a rebuild. You can price rebuild kits on line but then you'll have to check local machine shops for the machining costs associated with a rebuild.
