H engine occasionally stuck

On rare occasion, my 1949 Farmall H engine will stop at a point when it's shut off where it is extremely difficult (almost impossible) to turn over. The starter (a 6 volt starter on a 12 volt system) has LOTS of torque but absolutely will not turn the engine. I can tow the tractor and cannot even get the engine to turn over with the transmission in 4th gear. I dump the clutch and the wheels lock up and skid. Only by putting the tractor in road gear can I enough "leverage" against the engine to make it to turn over. When I do that the engine turns over and starts right up. This "freezing up" only occurs maybe once in 40 or 50 starts. Anyone have any idea what"s taking place? Thanks...Dave

Forgot to say-next time it happens take rocker cover off and check if you have a valve stuck CLOSED. If this is the cause it is either that a valve stem is not lubricating or the stem is slightly bent. Initially try an upper cylinder lubricating additive in your gas tank. That will cure it if its lubrication. If its a bent valve stem best pull the head off before it bends a push rod or tears the valve seat out. Mike Farmer

I have an M and an H. On the odd occasion its been necesary to tow start them both. From my experience they always lock up in 4th or lower. So we always tow in 5th so thats probably nothing to do with your basic problem. But I recon your starter motor jams on the odd occasion and it could be absolutely nothing to do with the engine itself. I've got a pig of a Fordson which does just that. Mike Farmer

I have seen a valve hanging open do that. If it does it again pull the valve cover and see if one valve isn't down.

Could be the starter locking up or a hyd lock because of to much gas in the cylinders. Do you turn the gas off when you park it?? If you don't then that could be the problem and if you don't it can lead to bigger problems down the road because of gas in the oil

The next time that happens loosen the starter bolts, sounds like the starter locks up.

I think it probably is starter lock up. To avoid having this happen should I replace the starter?

D Raymond: If you think starter lockup is the cause, pull the starter, have a look at the teeth on starter drive as well on the flywheel ring gear. Let us know what you see, condition of those gears. If this only happens once in 45-50 starts very likely the starter motor itself is in good condition.

Next time it happens, try loosening the starter mounting bolts until you can move back of starter 1/4" sideways. Then try the starter with it loose, if it works you may run it for years that way. Another way to loosen a locked starter if you are on level ground, is place the tractor in high gear and rock it one way then the other on a rear wheel. Often doing it that way you will hear a click when starter unlocks. Still another is place it in 5th and give it a tug backwards with another vehicle.

I've run them that way for years, probably wont get much worse for some time. Tow starting will do damage when the starter is locked, in fact you can bend the starter shaft. Shame to do that if the motor portion of the starter is in good working order.

Probably your going find a bad spot on the flywheel ring gear. Changing that ring gear requires splitting the tractor. Years ago we often ran them that way until we had other reasons to split the tractor, ie engine rebuild, clutch replacment, etc. I know this may be annoying however you may split the tractor, find you have a clutch and presure plate one year away from replacing. Personally, unless it gets worse, I'd wait until major rebuild time for ring gear. Called, killing two birds with one stone.
