Hey Guys,

Out here at the farm and starting in on Grandad's C. Honed the sleeves and got some rings from the local IH man, but they were too big. It's kind of strange. The tractor serial number is 4275, and the block serial number is 47xx. Apparently whoever bought this thing new lost the motor early on, because Grandad bought it in the early 50's, (it's a '48), and says he's never overhauled it. So anyway. The sleeves look like they have really thick shoulders compared to my H, the only motor I've seen with the head off. Are these wet sleeves? They have the bore classification stamped on the sleeve rather than the block, like the H, and each sleeve has an X stamped on it. We took the rings back to IH and they couldn't even figure out what we needed. I jumped on here and see that 3" rings are twice as much as 3 1/8" rings are. What's up with that? Everyone upsized so no market for original bore anymore? A set of rings is $100, and heck we can get sleeves, pistons, and rings for $300. A couple of the original sleeves are very slightly pitted, just one small spot in each, but this tractor won't see any hard work again so we figured it would be ok, maybe burn a little extra oil. But $100 rings kind of pushes you toward wanting to just overhaul.

Need Gene or someone for an assist here. I'm even starting to wonder if they put a B block in this C. Can send a picture if it helps. Just want to be sure of what we've got.

It's funny. Grandad used to poo-poo the A's and B's as too small. Now his (Super) C that he was proud of saying could keep up plowing with his H might actually be a B!

Thanks,

Brian

Brian: If your truly going to get to the bottom of this you'll have to provide block part number, casting date codes for whole tractor as well as engine serial number. All C, SC, SA, 100, 200, etc. have a six diget block part numbers, plus R1, R2, or R3 at the end. I fogotten exact numbers for the A and B but am certain it's only 4 or 5 digets.

Contrary to what some people believe, tractors after 1948 do not necessarily share the same or even close serial numbers. I have seen 1948 to 1951 tractors with a spread of up to 1,000, however the block part number and casting date codes were right for an original engine. Between 1951 and 1954 I have seen a spread of 2,000, yet the block part number and casting date codes were correct for an original engine.

I don't have the C or early SA block part numbers close at hand, one of those items that haven't surfaced since I moved. SA after serial number 310300, all SC, 100 and 200 used block part 354898 starting with R1, or later R2 and finally R3.

Thanks Hugh,

I think we got to the bottom of it. It is another C block. Don't know why we got so confused, I think the IH man may have helped. Sure do appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

Sadly I've got to leave the farm tomorrow and head home. We didn't accomplish much this time, but for this project it's more about spending time with Grampa than aything else.

Thanks again,

Brian

Just take a piston along when you go for rings that way they can measure and get the rite size.

If your tractor has hydraulics it does not have a A or B engine as they did not have an opening in the block for mounting of a hydraulic pump. Likely your tractor still has rings for 113 and your IH man has given you SC rings. 1/8 inch larger than C rings. Just measure the bore to see if it is 3 inch or 3 1/8 inch. The engine number and tractor number should match, if original engine is in it.

Hey Guys,

Got her figured out. Apparently the early C's, (first 4700) were 113, and the later ones came out as 123. But I see what you meant about the hydraulics.

Thanks a bunch,

Brian

More than 4700 of them had 113's in them. All I ever seen had 113 in them. I have a 49 and 50 and both have 113 engines in them. Super C's had 123's in them.

Coulda swore that's what the IH man was reading out of his book, but I could be wrong.

Lots of IH men nowdays don't really know to much about these things. We have a dealer not far from here, they look at you like your crazy when asking about parts for some of these old ones. Look around on their lot though and a salesman is all over you.

My neighbor has a 46 B that has the opening blocked off with a plate. I am sure it is original as his dad had it when I was a kid.

I would just about bet it is out of a SA or C. I have had 3 or 4 A's and B's and none had the opening for a pump.

The engine # matches the tag on the seat bracket. I rebuilt the engine 2 years ago.

I have a 45 B and 46 A here now and neither have the opening. Maybe some late ones did have, but I haven't seen any.

Hi Red, from what I had read in the past the C came with the 113ci. 3" bore engine. Yes, same as the A and B. The Super C"s came with the 123ci. 3.125" engine. I have heard that some of the late C"s came with the 123ci. engine but not sure on that. I would put a set of 3.125" pistons with a .375" dome from Howard Industries in it. Mill the head and enjoy the petty little tractor. Good Luck,
Charles
