Hey Guys, Out here at the farm and starting in on Grandad's C. Honed the sleeves and got some rings from the local IH man, but they were too big. It's kind of strange. The tractor serial number is 4275, and the block serial number is 47xx. Apparently whoever bought this thing new lost the motor early on, because Grandad bought it in the early 50's, (it's a '48), and says he's never overhauled it. So anyway. The sleeves look like they have really thick shoulders compared to my H, the only motor I've seen with the head off. Are these wet sleeves? They have the bore classification stamped on the sleeve rather than the block, like the H, and each sleeve has an X stamped on it. We took the rings back to IH and they couldn't even figure out what we needed. I jumped on here and see that 3" rings are twice as much as 3 1/8" rings are. What's up with that? Everyone upsized so no market for original bore anymore? A set of rings is $100, and heck we can get sleeves, pistons, and rings for $300. A couple of the original sleeves are very slightly pitted, just one small spot in each, but this tractor won't see any hard work again so we figured it would be ok, maybe burn a little extra oil. But $100 rings kind of pushes you toward wanting to just overhaul. Need Gene or someone for an assist here. I'm even starting to wonder if they put a B block in this C. Can send a picture if it helps. Just want to be sure of what we've got. It's funny. Grandad used to poo-poo the A's and B's as too small. Now his (Super) C that he was proud of saying could keep up plowing with his H might actually be a B! Thanks, Brian
