I cannot understand how hydro fluid is entering my engine cranckcase. Please explain which seal could be bad and what is the proper fluid to use. Thanks

Adam,

Yes, it is a fairly easy fix; especially if a groove has not been worn into the pump input shaft.

My "48 SA has a Pesco pump which uses a regular oil seal (not an "O" ring). I bought it at a local auto parts store. It was a "National" or "Federal-Mogul" brand part #471466 and my cost was $5.00 just about a year ago.

IH has illustrated step-by-step instructions that are included in their "Manifold & Hydraulic Pump Seal Ring & Gasket Package (part #355 207 R91).

Also, the I & T Shop Service Manual (IH-8) has instructions on page 87.

Keep in mind that only 2 of the 4 bolts/washers/nuts hold the pump to the block; the other 2 hold the halves of the pump together.

I had that ging on my SuperC. There were two types of pumps, and mine is the one where it was a simple matter of replacing a couple of O-rings. Not sure what would have been involved had it been the other type.

Don't know if the same two types (or others) were offered on the SA, but I'm thinking it shouldn't be a bad fix.

The fluid is getting in from the pump seal.

For the fluid type I think when the tractor was new it had the same oil that wsa in the engine.
30 wt non detergent. Some use hytrans.
