Hi, My Dad has a rare 1933 Farmall F-12. It is a "7 MPH" F-12. It is a faster F-12 with NO OVERDRIVE UNIT. I've been thinking, we have a Heisler overdrive unit from a F-14, if we put the Heisler overdrive in the 7 MPH F-12, how fast do you think it would go? Too fast maybe??!!

Just curious.

Thanks.

I guess some guys like to see themselves in print. I thought my first message didn't go through, so I wrote another one. My wife says I don't talk much, so I was surprised to see I wrote TWO messages!

Fourteen mph is not enormously fast (an H will do about 18 at full-throttle without a load), but I would be concerned about braking with an F-12. Those levers are too short to give you much power, and they are very hard to reach. Designed for use with steel-wheels, which would usually stop the tractor without brakes (lugs dug into the ground). Automatic turning brakes means you seldom needed to touch the levers. F-14 levers would give you good braking, but you'd have to "steer" with your knees to use both brake levers. Problem at high speeds is EVEN braking, so tractor does not slue dangerously sideways.

No experience with o'drives, but lots and lots with F-12s on steel and rubber. Fourteen mph on a smooth road is not esp. dangerous, but you don't have much braking power with those short levers, AND they are hard to reach. F-14 levers would make it a lot safer, even though you'd have to "steer" with your knees in order to apply both brakes. Applying brakes evenly is IMPORTANT at high speeds on a rubber-tired tractor. On steel, they'll stop within a foot or so, but on rubber, you can get quite a bit of rolling forward after the clutch is released.

Tye 7mph gear in an F-12 was an option for rubber tyred tractors and is the same 3rd gear found in the O-12, I-12 and Fairway-12. The latter tractors also had a higher speed 2nd gear. They also got a further speed increase (40%) by changing the gears between the output shaft of the gear box and the differential.

You just put the trannsmission in neutral, It will take you up to 20 mph, give or take. By the way does anyone else have a Heisler for my F-20?

Well it depends on what the ratio is on your Hysler overdrive is. I have a F-12 with the 2.1 ratio so that would make your 7mph speed now capable of traveling 14.7 mph. Now I don't think your 12 horse power tractor will be capable of pulling itself to that speed from a standstill. That overdrive unit does effectivly give you 6 speeds Foward and 2 in reverse. Also the number of teeth on the overdrives input to transmission on a F-14 and a F-12 is different so you would have to change the gear inside the transmission to mate to the F-14 Hysler o.d. Good luck with that!

I took a hiesler off an F-14 and put it on my F-12 and it worked fine, but I would say the speed was still less than 10 MPH. My overdrive has bad bearings and seals so I took it back off since it leaked like I pulled the drain plug.

Don't think it will be any different than a F-12 with a standard transmission. You will put the transmission in neutral and engage the overdrive.
