While cleaning and painting my H I removed the magneto drive coupling that the magneto impluse coupling lugs fit into. The drive coupling gear engages a gear driven off of the engine. I tried to reinstall the drive coupling gear into the same tooth position but I am not sure if I did. Question, If I did not reinstall the gears into their original position will this affect the engine timing? If this does affect the timing are there gear teeth marked so that I can re-reinstall the magneto drive coupling into the correct tooth position?

Any advise will be appreciated.

Al

If you haven,t pre marked it as per the photo then I guess you will need to take the timing cover off and line it all up as per the manual. A possible alternative is to ask someone with a running tractor to park close to yours and set his own at TDC and remove the mag. You then set yours at TDC and play with the mag until you get exactly the same line up. I wish I'd thought of that when I did the same thing a while ago. Mike Farmer MTF

The timing is very important if you have a magneto. Not so much with a distributor where it can be turned to a greater degree. While rebuilding my '51 H, I snapped a picture of what the drive slot would look like at TDC, 1 tooth ahead, and 1 tooth behind. I dropped it in the Parts and Pieces gallery. You can save it and upsize to get a clearer view. You will definitely be able to tell if you're off.

Yes it has to be installed so the mag will fire when the pistons are on tdc. You will have to line the gear with the timing marks on the camshaft. Better get an I@T manual.

If you mean the two small gears inside the magneto, they are supposed to be marked. Mine weren't. So, I put it at TDC and did trial and error -- It took a while.
