444 battery and various starting/electrical questions

I am trying to solve a weak spark problem. What is the correct battery and battery cable for a 1968 IH 444? It has a 12v battery with 475 cca on it now. I have no idea how old it is. I think i need to start by replacing the battery, and ground strap cable and positive cable to the starter.
I still have to test voltage and resitance in various areas. Electrical things have not exactly been my bag. Some ideas I have found in the archives, but time has been tight the last few months. The next two weeks open up a bit, so hopefully I can get her started again.
Any ideas on where to start would be appreciated, including battery size, voltage regulator resistance, voltage at coil, etc. I am also thinking of installing an electronic ignition and getting rid of the points.

I have had other starting issues i the last few months, a new coil helped for awhile, trying to time it made it run better for a little bit, carb rebuild helped for a bit... but nothing I tried helped eveything. Jump starting got it running the last time she ran, but not since. still it seemed like it was not burning everything based on the look of the exahust.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

Brian

OK, here is what I found. - testing the battery, and I show 14v. The battery is ok. Tested the voltage at the connection to the coil, and that shows 12v.
I am assuming that I probably damaged the coil, since it needed external resistance. I'm thinking now I should get a 12v neg ground coil with internal resistance and a 6v electronic ignition module?
thanks for your help, Brian

Thanks for the thought. There has been quite a mickey mouse wiring job done to her in the past. I can't even tell what should be where or if it is correct according to the wiring diagram I have.

The coil is only a few months old, and it says use with external resistance.
I'll try to run a few electrical tests on it tomorrow. I should be home early enough to get a few things figured out before it gets too dark.

Some of the resistive wire strands could be broken not letting enough current thru for the coil ?
I had a heck of a time figuring it out. some guy on here finally let me know about the resitive wiring dropping the voltage to the coil on purpose. I had looked all over that sucker for the dropping resistor. He said the resistive wire got frayed on his and set the harness on fire....

I currently have the wiring stripped off of my 2444, trying to get the time to rewire it. I am just running switched 12V to the coil and using an internal resistor coil.
Much easier that way since I am rewiring the whole shebang.

The $$$ has a piece of resistive wire in the wiring harness that it uses to drop the 12V to 6V for the coil. Maybe you have a 12V coil (internal resistor) on it ?

Also the condenser in the dist can cause weak spark ?

Sounds like you might have a battery or charging system problem as well.

You local auto parts dealer can likely test the battery for you.
