Trying to remove the rear hubs. I built a puller out of 4 X 4 hot rolled steal with an inch and a half bolt in the center. Still can not budge the hub. Even heated it. Any body got any wild ideas??? Tempted to get a cut off saw and saw the hub in half. I'm not trying to save it. I want to use different hubs.

A late reply, but here goes:
Use a pipe tap on the hole in the hub so that a plug can be screwed in. Put a grease zerk in the plug, and pump grease into the space between the axle and the hub. 10 to 15,000 psi pushing on that surface area should push it off pronto. JimN

I have never taken these off but do they go back on just as hard or is there a trick to that too.

Things like this with splines will usually go back together without much problem. That is providing you have cleaned up the splines really well.

While I dont normally recommned this, take out the center bolt, load it up with penetrating oil, and drive around in circles. have someone who can watch for you and see that its moving. When it is, jack it up and push it back on, or drive it back to the shop and then get it off. Thats how I got the hub off of my I4.

Driving around may not work. My I-6 did not even have the retainer bolt in the end of one axle when I got it. It had been driven around plenty and never thought of coming loose. I also tried to get the rims off the hubs by driving around with the bolts loose. That had no effect at all.

I low what your talking about. I spent the last couple days getting the wheels and castings off my 560W. The one on the right, the bolt took some time to get out. But the center came pretty easy, took some driving with a hammer, and had to get the wheel dolly at the right angle slipped right off. The one left however was a bear. Took me half a day to get the thing off. The bolt came out with no problem, but the center casting didnt want to budge. Tryed hammering on it, torching it and still wouldnt move. Ended up using a big "T" bar puller, got to move about half an inch, than the puller stripped out. So I had to swipe the other one. I sat there with a air impact on the threaded puller rod, while there was antoher person hammering on the back side of casting. Took probobly two hours to get the thing off.

Hope you can find a way, the things are a bear.

Can't see how you could ever saw those hubs off. Mine are 3 inches thick at the outer edge and must be nearly 6 inches at the axle. Solid disk of cast iron. I know about a W-6 where the hub had to be heated near red hot before it came off. I've not had my hubs off on the I-6, but did take the rims off the hubs. They were rusted solid on there. The about 1/16 inch gap between the hub and the rim was filled with rust. Lot's of penetrating oil and a puller set up with eight 5/8 inch high strength threaded rods and heavy 2 inch square tubing on the back side of the rim finally got them off. Is still took cheaters on the wrenches on the 5/8 threaded rod. I'm sure that was many tons of force on the thing. It took me 3 weeks to get the first one off, trying various things until I came up with the 8 bolt puller setup. Got the second one off after 3 days of soaking and pulling.

I had a similar experience, so I know they can be practically "welded" on. After breaking a hydraulic jack and a Portapower, I ultimately had to take the trans cover off, unbolt the axles and take off everything outboard of the transmission housing. I took the axle-hub combo into a commercial machine shop that does work for the mines. They said it took something like 16 tons to press it out. I was afraid to use too much heat for fear of breaking the cast but I tried all sorts of penetraing oils and hydraulic pullers/pushers until I resorted to the above method. I just recently did an I-4 and it practically slid right off! Good luck.

I have heard of them exploding when put in a press. Some just don't want to come apart..... .

Thanks for all the ideas. I think the thing to do is take the top cover off and change out the axles I think i can just take the axles out with out removeing the axle houseing I hope this will work. I tryed to take the bolts out of the drawbar witch also holds the winch on and they did not want to come out either I think they will break tryed all the tricks on that one to.Just getting wore out hammering on this thing!!!Thanks again
