Howdy Boys: Well, it took a while to get back on line after moving, but it's good to see the old IH forum again.
I've got a Super M, stage II, and it has the hydraulic pump on the engine. Attached to that pump is another pump for the Behlen power steering. The distributor is attached to the power steering pump - final result being the distributor cap is practically jammed against the oil filter housing. I don't know how I would even give the darn thing a tune up - no room to work. Anyway, the distributor is not installed right and the #1 wire is in the #4 position on the cap; I need to turn it 180 degrees, I suppose. Does the distributor just pull out and can I rotate it 180 degrees and reinstall? Or, will something (such as a shaft extention) fall out? As always, thanks for the help. Good to be back. mike durhan

One solution is to replace that IH horizontal dist. with a Delco vertical unit. Another solution might be to discard that Behlen pump and run the power steering with the live hydraulic pump, which will require the addition of a priority valve.

Hi Rusty. Yeah, that is probably the way to go (priority valve), but don't know when I'll find one. Meantime, I'll change the oil and filter and work over the distributor at the same time, I guess. Good to hear from you guys again. I've missed you all. mike durhan

CityBoy You can get the distributor off with out removing anything but the wires and cap. This is the only way I ever tuned up a distributor on any 4 cylinder IH. Just set engine on #1 remove distributor rebuild reinstall on #1 and set timing, you will set pionts when you have ti off, much better anyway.

Mike - The distributor with a PS pump tucked between it and the live pump makes for a tight squeeze indeed!!

If you remove the wires, then the cap and rotor you may be able to wiggle the distibutor out.

The task however is MUCH simpler if you remove the oil filter can and element first!

good to see you're back. yup you can take the hold down bolt off the distributor and pull it straight out and then reset it back to one. there aiint much room with that double pump set up. you almost have to remove the oil filter to work on the distributor. you could eliminate that pump by using a priority vale off the live pump if ya want.
