Farmall M....clunking noise.

My Farmall M has a "clunking noise" coming from inside the engine. It was low, low, low on oil for some time I am guessing and driven and worked hard. Thus the noise. Someone who works on tractors heard it and said that if something is not done with the engine it would eventually throw a rod. Lost his number to ask him again specifically what he thought it was. Any of you guys out there have an idea of what has happened? What would be a good checklist to properly diagnose it. And what if, needs to have done. Pictures, diagrams ect are welcomed.
thanks

Items not mentioned so far include the current oil pressure (if less than 20 PSI cold, and dropping from there it is not typical and indicates problems. If it has strong pulses in the needle movement at idle, it is also an indication of bearing failure.)
The changing of the oil should include a scraping around in the bottom of the pan with a wire to look for particles and shavings of metal.
Oil analysis can also be done professionally to assess material in the oil that indicates failure.
If it is in the "bottom" of the engine, it is probably a Main or rod, In that case it is an out of frame rebuild. JimN

if it was run low on oil and still working, and now its clunking, i assume is a low frequency pounding, at the very least i would suspect the main bearings are gone. unfortunately, when you start cooking bearings, they send small particles of metal thru the oil gallery and in to all the areas of the motor. you also probably have worn / scored rod bearings, same with the cam bearings, and probably wrist pin bushing wear. drain the oil in a clean pan and check it for metal filings. also pull the oil filter and examine it for same. prolly find metal flakes. drop the oil pan, pull the center main cap and check the bearing. also check a few rod bearings. if they are scored up, time for a major overhaul. dont run it anymore before you check it all out. if you do and it scatters, you repair costs go up exponentially.

May just be a broke cam gear or something, but I would check it out, before you run it anymore. Had a C with a broke crankshaft that clunked a lot.

Drain the oil, put in a new filter and fill to correct oil level. If you were running it with a low amount of oil, parts may have worn out or were damaged since they were not being lubricated by the oil. If it still "clunks" when the oil is changed, you may need to rebuild the engine.

Any time an engine gets low on oil and starts to make noise the damage is done. It is probably going to throw a rod if you keep running it. Pull the pan and look to see what is going on. You can take off the rod caps and see what has happened.
