Wallace: I really wouldn't want to depend on these guys if I knew nothing about PTO. In the early days of pre 1954 Farmalls we had transmission driven pto, basically it stopped every time you depressed the clutch pedal. Then we had LIVE PTO, and there were two types; Independant PTO which was one lever or switch could be engaged or disengaged no matter what you may be doing with transmission or clutch. The second LIVE PTO was two stage clutch, you push the clutch half way down to stop transmission function and all the way down stops PTO. You have to stop tractor to engage or disengage that one, thus it couldn't be called independant, however they are both LIVE PTO as you can stop and or shift gears without affecting the PTO. There is another LIVE PTO, called the M&W hand clutch, it basically was a clutch in an H or M brake shaft that stopped forward movement through the diffential, however you could not shift gears. Still further there is a ground driven PTO, MF and several European tractors had it. Basically a transmission driven PTO that changed speeds everytime you shifted gears. These work great on power driven trailers, the trailer has same wheels and rear end ratio as tractor, you put a load on the trailer, and the lowly MF 35 will out pull two Farmall 400s.
