So much for sand blasting on base.

I took two small boxes of H parts in to the Auto Hobby Shop on my base so I could steam clean and sand blast them. The "enviromental safety" office came through for an inspection not too long ago and didn't like the set up for the sand blaster because some sand escaped towards a drain. So they shut it down. No more sand blasting. They shut down the painting booth a couple years ago I'm told. The steam cleaner is just a hot pressure washer, but doesn't get steamy.

The saving grace in my adventure tonight is that they have a pressurized parts cleaning tank. The guy let me put all the stuff in there to get sprayed all night. I'll pick it up tomorrow. I don't hold out much hope for the inside of the radiator pipe, which was scaled with rust. But we'll see what happens. The oil pan. breather cup, breather, and hydraulic access cover desperately needed cleaned off, so they, at least, will get what they need.
I'm just bummed I can't clean the stuff they way it needs to be done.

Mike, try to get the environmental office to approve blasting with an environmentally approved blasting agent. After all, we would not like to have you California guys exposed to sand. Especially, Navy guys in California!
Sometimes I wonder what this world is coming to!!!

Actually, it makes sense. The sand is knocking loose hazardous materials like paint, oil, hydraulic fluid, etc. If that goes down a regular drain it will contaminate. I just wish they would secure the area better, rather than just shutting the whole thing down.

Will do. Straight vinegar?

They shutdown the steam jenny operation and some of the sandblasting at Aberdeen Proving Ground years ago since they're near the Chesapeake Bay. We bought a Karcher power washer that used K1 kerosene to heat the water after that.Hal

Mike, you can do an electrolysis tank in a 5-gallon bucket with baking soda for small parts like that pipe.

Let me ask around to the tractor guys if they have something already set up. I can't think of anything but the radiator pipe that is actually rusty.

Removes paint as well. The paint will bubble up and peel right off.

Mike, several others have mentioned electrolysis.
You can do this in your garage with a trash can or plastic drum. It is amazing how well this works. You dont have the grit and sand problem that sandblasting leaves. I can talk you through how to build one for $20 and a second hand battery charger.

Roy, just type in electrolisis here on the forum, and all kinds of info will come up. There are some good pics of the set up as well.

Mike, do like I did, and set up an electrolisis tank. It is easy with a plastic garbage can, washing soda and a battery charger, which you will need anyhow fooling around with old tractors. It works great. Just take a wire brush and clean the piece up after taking out and it is shiney clean, and ready for paint.

the answer is simple go to the tractor supply or hard ware store get the sand blast kit for a pressure washer use it on that steam cleaner or hot water pressure washer and use air pressure to dry your parts and they will be ready for paint.I like sand blasting for the clean finish on the metal always hated the sand in drawers, socks, hair, and many other places but the water helps the sand go down to the ground not all around and in places. good luck,Roy

I didn't know that about the steam cleaners. I think the solvent tank I have the parts in right now will do the trick for the grime build up.
I don't know too many people out there on this base since I haven't worked in a squadron. It would be the intermediate level maintenance that I would need access too, and they are pretty picky about how their stuff is used. If I had a good friend I could try to sneak some stuff in. But just trying to get my foot in the door will probably yeild no return. I think the easier solution is to drive up to a club member's farm and use his blaster.
I was just hoping to use the Auto Hobby stuff because it's right around the corner from my office, and I could work on a few parts here and there after work.

Steam by itself doesn't clean very well. It has little weight. It is the heated water in the steam propellant stream that does the work. High pressure hot water cleaners are a superior cleaning machine so be glad the hobby shop has replaced the antiquated steam cleaner with newer technology.

Next, why don't you offer to design another blasting area. It could be something as simple as hay bales or some kind of solid panel fencing that intercepts the sand on its way to the drain. I assume that the authority who took away the priviledge can also restore it.

Perhaps you know someone in the aircraft maintenance hanger. It is almost certain that they have glass bead or abrasive cleaning equipment. If they are using an expensive abrasive, however, I would not fault them for refusing your tractor parts. They also probably have a vapor blaster but it won't do much on tractor parts.

Mike,
Can you talk them into setting a an electrolysis tank for cleaning the water pipe ? It is cheap and easy. OEM has new ones for $19.

Greg

Hello Greg, Who is OEM, or do you have a website for them? Thanks Mike
