I have my H head off being reworked and it has step head pistons in it. A fellow told me that only flat head pistons come in 1940 H C152 engines. Also all the head bolt nuts were 3/4" but one it was 11/16" is this common? The fellow I got it from hia family bought this tractor new and he said no one had ever gone into the engine before. Water pump was all they had ever replaced.

The larger nuts are "heavy duty", and are what is supposed to be there. The smaller one is a common ordinary "hardware store" style, and is not correct. You will not find the heavy duty nuts at any hardware store, farm supply store, Lowe's or Home Depot. You will have to get them at a machinery dealer, or from McMaster-Carr or similar. Fastenal might have them.

Piston rings weren't that great back in the 1940's
so I doubt the story of not having a rebuild. My brother and I bought a new 1949 Dodge Coronet and it drank oil. Even when new. A new set of rings
installed in 1953 and that cured the oil burning.
I drove it to Florida in 1955 just before I was I was discharged from the Army. I then pulled a mobile home from Ft Bragg NC to MD when I was discharged. Still didn't use oil. Hal

Unless the person who told you H had never had engine work has been around tractor all of these 67 years I would not put much stock in his story that engine has never had work. We used our H for full time farming back in fortys and 3 or 4 years was about life of engine and our nieghbors tractors were about the same.

What is the serial number of the H? Does it have an X code after the serial number?

IIRC, step heads were used for higher compression for higher altitude engines. The codes will tell us.

FBH 24108 both numbers match. This tractor was bought new in Oklahoma.

I've got a '40 also...I'm assuming yours is a distalate model like mine (no letters after the serial). IIRC, when I had the head off of mine years ago, they were flat head pistons.
Your's sure does sound like its got the 'altitude' option. They were either 5000 ft. or 8000 ft. pistons and cylinder sleeves, available as an option on distillate or high-compression engines.

Unfortunately, the codes might not tell you anything: you could get them as a 'special attachment', dealer installed, as well as factory ordered on the tractor.
So you might not find any special marks or letters if the dealer installed them.

All my head bolts were the same, so I can't help on the nut question.
