I have checked the archives about this but can't find the post I remember reading. The steering is sloppy on my narrow front M. I thought I remember reading, at one time, about taking off and turning the gear 180 degrees to help this. Am I mistaken? Could someone please give me a little more detail?

re: my previous post, I changed the gear oil but before I did added kerosene to the old, as suggested, got her warm and drained it clean. What a difference in noise and smooth shifting with the new gear oil! Thanks

To get the gear of the bolster shaft which has a tapered spline. Loosen the nut and back it off untill flush with top of shaft. Gst a buddy to help, lay a 2,3 pound hammer on top of nut, get big sledge-hammer and let the 2,3 pound have it, it might need more than one good hit. You will not harm anything.

I stopped the wobbling on my M by tightening the castle nut on top of the vertical bolster shaft. A 1/6 turn solved the problem.

Have I checked it for wear? Yes. It appears OK. Is there something I'm missing?

There are several things that can be involved in loose steering.....including the the u-joint, the worm gear at the front of the steering rod, the gear that you mention at the top of the steering pedestal, bushings in the pedestal, and wheel bearings. If you take off the cover at the top of the pedestal you can see if you have a full-circle gear or half-circle. If it is full-circle, you should be able to rotate it so you are using an unworn part.

If you take off the gear, do you need a puller to get it off? I had thought of trying that on mine but couldn't get it to come loose.

It is not necessary to take off the gear at the top. It may be easier to take out the four bolts that hold on the lower bolster and rotate the vertical steering shaft 90 or 180 degrees using the steering wheel. You will have to jack up the front of the tractor.

I had an "H" which I worked on, and I never got that gear removed. Tried puller, etc. but couldn't budge it. I didn't have a torch which might have solved the problem. Others will have the answer I expect.

if you have a puller hooked up on the top gear, get some tension on it and then strike the center bolt on the puller with a 3 lb hammer. 2 or three whacks and it should drop off. i have the front end up a couple inches off the ground with the wheels still on. gives it a little extra weight and, that bolster shaft is pretty heavy. if the front end is off and that sucker drops on yer foot, it 'll wake ya right up!!!

There are several pictures in the archives showing pullers for the sector gear but mine never came off AFTER NEARLY three months of pulling so I finally got a torch and a GBH and lifted the front wheels off of the ground . Tough to do sometimes. Turning the pedastal around sounds like a good idea.
