IH 424 Rear Differential Lock - How do I use it?

I was messing around on my 424 the other day and wanted to see if the tractor behaved differently when I engaged the differential lock. I couldn't seem to get it engaged. If I stepped on the pedal to lock it, it went down some distance but it never felt like it interfaced with anything.

How do these work?

How do you know if they are engaged?

How can I tell if mine is broken?

I just bought a IH 484 and engaged the differential, it worked. However, I cannot disengage it (the pedal stays depressed). The spring is there & in place. Any thoughts?

Chris: You should never engage the diff lock with a wheel or wheels spinning or during a turn. Oh, it will work for awhile, but you vastly shorten it's life.

That diff lock only stays engaged while you have your foot on the pedal. If you want to test it, see if it works, step on the pedal, hold it down while moving on gravel roadway, and try turning. If it's working you should notice front wheels slipping and rear wheel slipping on the side in the direction your turning.

That is interesting, Hugh. My manual for my Ford says it's okay to engage the dif lock as long as you are at idle or moving no faster than 5 mph. To be safe, I am going to engage it at a standstill from now on. By the way, I was making the big move to Alabama about the same week you were making your move. It just took 2 months for me and the phone company guy to get together to hook up the internet here. mike durhan

Mike: Your Ford may be a bit different that his 424. Those first IH were a sliding collar from one splined shaft to the other, thus coupling both together. Yours is very likely a friction oil bath clutch, still better if it's not spinning or turning when you engage it. Not much different than a slipped clutch, you slip it often enough, it shortens the life.

Chris,

First, don't press the pedal down while you have a tire spinning. Otherwise, the lock works only as long as you are pushing on the pedal. With the pedal down, you should be able to spin both wheels. If only one wheel spins when you have the pedal depressed, then you have a problem.

Chris: If your dif lock is like the one on my 3930 Ford tractor, you will notice engagement only when one wheel is spinning and you hit the pedal. My manual states that the operator should NOT engage the dif lock unless driving in a straight line. So, you might not feel anything - unless a wheel was spinning. I got hung up in the ditch out by the road the other day when bush hogging. Left tire was starting to dig a hole and tractor had stopped moving. I hit the pedal and the tractor jumped right out of the low spot and took off. No noise, no bump; nothing at all. So, yours may be fine. Hope this information helps. mike durhan
