Pat: Modified, and still not great horsepower. A good many 1066 and 1466 came from the factory cranking out 150 plus.

I don't know if they were right or not, but someone once told me that the last number of the tractor model in that era designated the number of cylinders; if the model number ended in 4, it was a 4 cylinder; if it ended in 6, it was a 6 cylinder; and, if it ended in 8, it was an 8 cylinder. Makes sense to me. So, a 1566 V-8 would be a misnomer. It would be a 1568. mike

Chuck: Don't let yourself get very excited about V8 diesels. None of them have been overly successful. Of all diesels over 100 hp in the past 75 years, 85% of them were inline 6s.

B.Jones said it for you, all those tractors IH put that V8 diesel in never tested as well at Nebraska as the same tractor with inline 6. The 6 is a naturally balanced engine, V8 are artificially balanced, and it just doesn't work in high torque engines.

IH 2-wheel drive v-8 diesel tractors were the 1468 and 1568.

There were some v-8 diesel 4x4 as well.

Yes they did. It was called a 1568. It was tested at Nebraska in May 1975. 150.7 Hp at 2600 rpm. 550 cu. in. The 1566 tested at 161 hp also at 2600 rpm but with the 436 turbo motor. I do not know if they ever made a 1586 with a V8. At Nebraska the V8 motor used more fuel and had less power.
