Can it be saved?

I got a 4 position switch from a junk yard for cheap. I can feel all 4 clicks in there. But when I cut away the wires from the back, and cleaned up the residue from a hornets nest, I'm wondering if this will actually be usable. If you looked, the spiraled wire on the top left is broke. The twisted bundle on the bottom left is broken as well. A new fuse is no sweat, but all the rust has be concerned. Should I tackle this, or just break down and get a new one? If I do tackle it, where can I get replacements for the broken bits in the back?

Mike, I think both of those coils are available at TM tractor parts of Walker Valley NY

I am going to use a VR with a 12v generator and battery. I want the switch to control the lights and look original. And if I am correct, a 4 position switch is correct for a '44 H. I'm not sure if they had 3 position yet.

Kind of where I'm leaning with this one too. And like pale rider said, I forsee future frustration.

It is fixable, but I was under the impression you were going to use a voltage regulator system. THis switch can be used for the lights on that if you want, but a three position is easier. THe Voltage reg system will keep your battery far more carefully charged than a Cutout system. It is also what is on it! and probably works. JimN

I do not know if these resistors are available or not. It would be my personal prefernece to junk this one with this amount of rust and damage--although I suppose it could be cleaned up.

Do yourself a favor with all the rust on those connection points and once they are cleaned, coat them with some deoxidizing compound. Once rusted like that they will always be prone to rusting again and can be the source of endless frustration.

Yes, the bottom wire is actually broken. It just doesn't look like it on the picture.

Mike,
The top coiled resistor is for the lights and is available from CIH and other sources. The flat one at the bottom controls the charge rate. Is the wire actually broken? If not it is still useable. The switch will come apart, do so and clean and lubricate the it.
