Anyone know the purpose of the twisted felt like material found in the valve train pans on the F-20? Pulled my head off today and removed the valve train and there is a rope lime material in the 2 pans above the valve train. Where can I get replacement material?

The ends of the felt strips need to be pushed into the holes in the tray, this allows the oil to drip on the rockers slow and lubricate them, otherwise the oil would run through fast and there would be no long term lubrication

They are there because the oil pump does not pump oil up to the rocker arms. They are oiled by means of the spouts on top of the valve cover and the felt prevents it from simply running through, dispersing it over a period of time.

Andy is right. I believe Rice Equipment (814) 226-9200 has then.

I got new felts for my 10/20 from the Fordson House in Escanaba, MI. F20 should be the same. They sell Fordson and McCormick parts. Good people. They have a website.

Those are felt strips. They sit it side of a tray on top the rocker arms. The vavlve cover has small caps on top, you can lubricate your rocker arms once in a while by pouring oil in the caps and that will fill the trays and soak the felts and that will keep the rocker arms well oiled.
