Gene,
You mentioned to me in a previous thread to put vinegar in the cooling system and let it sit for a week. Some time ago this was discussed the vinegar flush, and it was suggested to do a 50/50 with water vinegar. I tested that 50/50 on a piece of scale from the radiator and it didn't do anything to it. The way you wrote your note made it sound like you wanted me to fill the system up with 100% vinegar, work it through, and let it sit in there for a week.
Did I misinterpret that?
I bought some Prestone cooling system flush as well, and was going to use that. But I'll do whatever I can to get as much rust out as I can and cleaning the whole thing up before I put in clean water and anti-freeze.

Yeah, broke two bolts taking it off too. I replaced it with a new one.

I pulled the tractor out of the garage a bit today and took a hose to the inside of the engine. Very little came out of it. I'm thinking that it's probably pretty nice in there for the most part. I'll decide what to do once I get it running. But this weekend I'm going to concentrate on that.

Mike you arent using the tractor now and its just setting there thats why id fill it full and let it set the longer the better then drain and back flush on top of that the vinegar disposed wont upset all those crazys in CALIF. The vinegar is also good for cleaning small parts just let it soak for a week or so you will be surprised what it does.

In years past one of the antifreeze manufacturers (Xerex perhaps?) sold a "2 part radiator flush" that worked very well to remove scale, etc.

First part was an acid powder (oxalic acid I think...) You'd dump the acid into a system filled with straight water, then run the engine for an hour or two for it to circulate and work.

You'd then drain/flush a couple times with fresh water, then dump in the "neutralizer" powder(probably bicarbonate of soda) and let that circulate a few minutes.

Finally you'd drain/flush the system a couple more times with fresh water.

Worked best if you removed the thermostat and partially blocked the radiator to get good (and hot) water flow thru the radiator.

Don't know whether 2 part flush is still around...

You can cover the radiator core with a piece of cardboard to block the airflow. It shouldn't take very long to get your tractor warmed up.

My tractor won't be able to work. Best I could do is just drive it around a little while. I doubt that will get it hot from what I read.

If you want to get it hot, cut a piece of cardboard to put in front of the radiator to reduce airflow. You can work the tractor. Tow your wife's car around the block a few times.

Well I'm not Gene but, I have used the vinagar flush often and it does work well. 100% vinagar, run the engine till good and warm/hot. Let cool for safety and then drain flush with water. I made a rig that screws into the block drain and hook up a garden hose to it and back flush it for an hour or so. I have an Oliver 77 that would over heat on and and after I did that about 5 years ago it hasn't once over heated on me.
