Steering shaft won't quite connect

I put my radiator back on today, and I put the front steering shaft back in and engaged the worm gear. I'm trying to mate the U-join, but the indent where the Woodruff key sits is just slightly farther back than it should be. I tried cranking the steering wheel to get the front steering arm to move back some more, but no luck. I can't get the woodruff key back far enough to get the bolt through.

What do I need to do?

Mike I just saw your picture in the other thread. You need to flip that casting over so the grease fitting points up and put it on the other side of the gauge support so the grease fitting lines up with the hole in the top of the hood.

The casting is what is keeping you from getting things together.

Once you get the casting in place, you can loosen the collars up by the steering support and slide the steering wheel a little if you need to.

Hey Mike, it sounds like that front bearing is not pulling completely back into place. That's the only thing that could possibly be holding you up.
Roll that shaft out one more time and make sure the bearing seat in the gearbox is clean. Rolling the shaft back in should pull the bearing back into place. You may need to block the front wheels and give the steering wheel a few good tugs, too.

The bolt goes through the key. The key is a thick washer that fits into the groove at the top of the shaft. You put the key in between the open of the U-joint, rest it in the groove, and put the bolt through it and tighten it down. So I'm not exactly following what you wrote.

The difference in my problem, we're talking about the lower shaft, not the upper. The upper is meeting the collar mid way just right. My problem is the lower shaft not coming far enough back to meet the U-join at the right spot.

Andy Martin said: Check the steering column. If you have the worm gear bearing seated well, the steering column may be loose or bent. This is the structure that holds the steering wheel. It should have two set screw rings around the steering shaft to hold it in place.

Also, if you have the tractor jacked up and have loosened the frame rails, you may be out of alignment there, that is, if the frame rails are loose and hanging down toward the front, the steering shaft will be too short. Same thing if the bolster has been loosened.

Did you make sure the seat for the worm gear bearing was clean?

The steering column hasn't changed since I took the steering shaft apart. And I haven't done anything to the frame. But I will double check the inside cleanliness.

I've taken the shaft out twice and put it back in, still it comes up short. I've stuck the key in there and cranked the wheel fully over. Still it comes up short. I'm getting frustrated! We're talking less than an inch it needs to come back to be in the right position. What am I doing wrong??

I'll try the back and forth again, but I tried it a couple times with no luck.

Had the problem on a 450 and found the bearing in the steering colum wasn't all the way back. Played with it a little bit turning the shaft both ways and after doing that a few times all was well again

Make sure the steering shaft is in position where it is suppose to be and the plug on the steering box is tight. Go to the steeting post by the steering wheel and loosen the setscrews on the two collars where the shaft goes through the steering post. Now you can slide the shaft back or forward to where you need it and then retighten the setscrews on the collars

First be sure the woodruf key is all the way into its pocket. If it is rocking out a bit it will jamb and break the collar. tapping it down flat and in might take a brass drift punch, or old soft iron bolt, to seat it. Then it may take some spray lube, and a mallet to gently tap the shaft into position. If it is still giving grief, pull it out and polish it up with 220 grit paper to shine the shaft. Then lube and insert. JimN
