How many holes should be on the steering shaft hump on My m's hood. I have Three smaller holes. One for the U-joint grease fitting, one bolt hole to hold the hood down and one other hole. What is it for?

Also, should the hood bolt hole be round? My bolt hole looks like it has been worn into an oval. Should it be round?

My mistake, it has the hole to grease the stearing shaft bearing, and a hole to hold the hood down. And it has one other

Other hole was to grease steering shaft universal joint on some M. Later ones didn't have that hole.

Excluding the gauge holes, the only hole in the hump is for the grease gun -- someone must have added the others.

I will withdraw most of the above statement. My Super H only has the u-joint hole. My 41 H, which needs a lot of work and mostly just sits there has the bearing hole D Slater mentions plus the u-joint hole -- as he stated, on the later models the bearing hole disappeared at some time or other. My dad's 47 H (last seen about 1960), I don't think had the bearing hole, too long ago to remember. My 47 M hood has been welded in so many places that I can't tell whether it has the hold down hole (except for this one, I have not driven any M's)--the u-joint hole and the bearing hole were welded shut for whatever reason. Sorry for the misinformation, was thinking only of my SH, which gets the most use.

Depends what year tractor you have or if another hood was put on tractor sometime. Along the way the hole to grease universal joint was eliminated. Other hole is to grease what IH calls the steering shaft bearing. Hold down hole was sloted.

My M hood is so beat up, I haven't paid much attention to it as some places have been welded, it will be replaced if I ever redo the tractor -- Does it have more holes than the H hood?
