Today was the first shot at starting up this H. I filled the radiator, and found out it has a pretty big leak. Put fuel in the tank, found out that my carb leaks at a couple places, and the sediment bowl valve leaks. But regardless, we pushed on to give it a shot. We hooked a 6v battery up and gave it a try... nuthin. Not even a burp.

The wiring is sort of odd. There is a VR hooked up to a weird spot, and a solenoid in the loop. It used some aftermarker push button, and also an up/down flip switch.
So, what I think I'm going to do is just rerun the wiring correctly. Fuix the fuel line, fix the sediment bowl, and fix the radiator.
I'm just bummed. I wanted to hear it fire up today. I really thought it would. third party image

You need to check for battery voltage at the coil with the points open using a volt meter. You will need the ignition switch on too. Hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor to make sure you have good suction there. Hal

Shoot thats no fun. LOL Sure glad my wife doesn't do that to me, if she did she would get well just a minute and I will and that minute would end up being till the engine ran even if it took me an hour. LOL My wife learned a long time ago if I'm messing with a tractor I'll be doing so till its to cold out, to dark out and I just get to tired to keep working on it.

My friend has a test light. He's going to make sure his batter is charged. I told him I was going to just take the radiator out again to get it fixed first. I'd like to get that done before proceeding.

I kept the dipstick. It's in there now. Although there is one on Ebay I've been watching that is over $40 already. third party image

mike if you got wiring spaghetti, do like old says and hot wire it. if you are 6 v postive ground, run a wire from the neg on the battery to the coil, terminal opposite the one that goes to the distributor. use an alligator clip, so if it fires up, you can shut it down quickly. pull the coil wire or a spark plg wire , hook up the jumper and crank it over, see if you get spark. if you get spark, be sure tractor is in neutral, block the back wheels, set the throttle about 1/4 open, give her a quick snort of ether starting fluid and crank er over, she should pop on ether. if she pops, be sure the fuel is on, give er another quick snort and let er rip!!! if it fires up, it 'll prolly smoke some till she clears out, then let her run at a fast idle, keep yer eyeball on the oil pressure. if you dont get pressure shut er down quick. when all is good, have the wife and kids plan an escape route, climb aboard, select 1st or 2nd gear and go fer a zoom!!!!!

May self I would not have given up that fast. Check for spark, if not spark hot wire it. If you had spark make sure its really getting gas to the plugs etc. Yep I don't let one whoop me it runs or it gets made to run no questions ask go get it Mike you can do it if nothing else go kick the tires a few times to let off some steam and let it know you mean business

Mike, Mike, Mike:
Take it easy, son.
The more effort it takes on your part to get it running, the more your heart will sing when it finally does. As they say: "If it were easy, everyone would do it." In the meantime, look at it this way: The more you have to do to it, (ignition tune-up, rewire, carb rebuild, etc.) the closer you are learning to validate your title as a (ah-hem) "tractor guru"! Nothing wrong with that. That is the way we all learn.
I know just enough to be dangerous. There are several great guys here on this forum who know a lot more than me and several who know a lot less - and there are a few who think they know a lot but don't. Point is, you learn by doing. Keep the faith; you'll get there. You're going to love that ol' ornery red machine when it purrs at you.
Best of luck. You're my horse if you don't ever win a race! (because of your enthusiasm and determination)

Mike, I didn't see any thing about the steering shaft, so I guess its fixed. Now your down to 3 more small things you will get it. There is always tomorrow, when there's nothing left to fix it will run. Than you have to go drag in another tractor to work on thats all the fun. After I finish one I park it in the shed and start the next one my wife thinks I am nuts. Oldiron29

Don't worry about it. It will fire up eventually and it'll sound all the sweeter for your trouble when it does :) I have been known though to use jumper leads to take power straight to the coil and run without water (just for a moment) to get something to fire up. Just be careful. tractorsam

Sounds like you're on the home stretch...just keep on plugging away, and it'll come.

(and don't get impatient to hear her fire: I made a mistake years ago and fired an H with no water in it. Those sleeves need the water for support, and to act as a hydrostatic 'shock absorber'. To my surprise and regret, I cracked two cylinder sleeves, and had to start all over. A hard lesson learned 'cause I couldn't wait.) Keep us posted and good luck.

I'm astounded a dry sleeve engine would care if it had water in it until it got warm. I'm guessing the sleeves were already cracked.

But, then, I've not started a Farmall without water, just Ford and Chevy car and truck engines.

I've seen more than one of these that cracked the sleeve and block because someone had the idea that they could get away with no fluid for a, 'quick check'.

Its your dime, so roll the dice anyway you want, but I still wouldn't take the chance, 'dry' sleeve or not.
