Hi Folks A question, Im thinking about buying a cub low boy to mow grass and use around the farm. My old rider is worn out and by the looks of prices I can buy a used cub and belly mower just as cheap as a new mid priced rider mower. My large tractors are not real handy. Now Ive looked at the online stuff and the HP of these things are running fron 14 to 25 on what looks like the same model tractors. Could any one tell me the real hp or do they vary this much. thanks

A PROPERLY tuned Cub will handle a 60 inch belly mower very well. Many times a poorly running engine comes to life when the valves are adjusted (a commonly neglected maintenance item).

Have used Cub for that purpose over 25 years.

Mate it to the Woods 42 inch mower and you will have plenty power. I use mine to cut lawn of 3 acres.

Does fine as well cutting brush and weeds to foot to two feet tall. Sometimes have to back up for 2d pass but it gets the job done.

Besides, it is more fun than riding a lawnmower.

Best

tractor data dot com has the 58 lowboy at 11 hp. they are good tractors, they cut real nice but are a little short on hp. i have a 5 ft woods under my farmall cub, it cuts but a little short on power, my farmall b has also a 5ft woods, cuts a lot better. if you are cutting a lot of grass, look at a used zero turn. i have a huster with a72" deck, it mows about 7-8 miles an hour, it will knock down some grass.

In the later model cubs the horsepower increased from aroun 8 or 9 to around 14. Think it was early 70's but not sure. We have a '78 with a 42" mower that does pretty good. The 140 (23 hp) however is much better for mowing and has a water pump (cub is thermo syphon and will overheat sometimes). I have a 6' finish mower on the back of the 140 which makes quick work for a few acres. I don't think the 140 would cost much more, if any.

The early Cubs had about 10 hp and the later models, starting around the 60's were up to 12 hp. They will handle a 4' belly mower, but I wouldn't try to cut anything to high.
