Hello all,

Looking for Farmall 140 specific sites / forums. Any good links out there??? Also, what crankcase oils do you guys use in the winter? Summer?
This from a smilin, giggling fool who finally got his IH vintage tractor.

Like others have said between Hugh, Gene and Dave they know all there is to know about 140. One word of warning don't mention 12 volt conversion if you want to stay on their good side (JUST KIDDING).

NDS: Come on now,LOL, you know I have 2 - 12 volt conversions in my 130 and 140. Ah, but the conversion I like best is the 6 volt alternator in my Super A. If it weren't for a 12 volt motor I use the 130 and 140 would have 6 volt alternators.

Most folks confuse this matter as they call it one issue. It is two issues, the first one being 6 or 12 volt, and either if properly maintained will start any Farmall gasser under 200 cubic inches. The second issue is generator or alternator, and there is no question the alternator is by far the best charging system, be it 6 or 12 volt. You will buy and maintain an alternator for about 1/2 the cost of a generator.

I've read Dave's post and he probably should look at an alternator even though his generator is working. He'll probably buy the 6 volt alternator for less money than the voltage regularor for his current generator.

Gene and Dave may not be as liberated as I. That's a HOOT. LOL

Heheh, I definitely got the impression that these folks know what they're talking about. I appreciate having a forum like this and folks like these, life and joys like this are better shared.

Any tips on the charging system most common fault??
Dave

Thanks for all the responses guys. I'll hang out here I guess. Hope to get some pictures soon. I think I will try a good 10W-30 here in Colorado. Average winter temp is about 40, but with every storm we get down under freezing, and January February down below zero. Want something thin enough to run in the cold, but thick enough to not blow by the rings, or drip from old gaskets.

This unit has been outdoors for at least 10 years, probably more. Runs smooth and strong, no smoke. But the battery won't charge and drains overnight.

Battery is in horrible shape, so I will replace that and start from there. What is the most common cause for these units not charging? The generator is producing juice just fine, lights are bright as anything when running, even if the battery itself is flat.

The regulator looks like it hasn't been touched in 10 or more years. And the light switch / starter button are rusted all to heck, as someone lost the cover plate and they have been exposed all these years. The wires to the lights are in bad shape, but work, although the light switch is non-funtional.

After I get through fixing the charging system, I start sanding, straightening, and painting! Can't wait. Thanks again!
Dave (1fortyfanatic)

Looks like the old farts forgot about your oil question. Just an old fart thing. I run Sae 30 year round in all my Farmalls from big to little. They are right. If you are hunting info on your tractor, here is the best place to find it. The 140, if taken good care of will outlast you and likely your decendants for at least another generation or two. Hugh, I don't have any trouble much out of the larger ones either.

From a cold old fart to a warm one, you get far enough north and you'll soon dump that 30 weight oil. It will fetch a 140 up almost as quick as your 450. 10W-30 or 15W-40 only way to go if your near or north of 45th parallel. If you don't believe me, ask Ed Rendel when it turns -45F up in Hornpayne ON.

Hugh, If I lived were it got that cold, at the first warm spell, I would throw my stuff on a wagon and head south. Same way with the gulf coast and hurricanes. After one of those died down northward I would go. Try to keep yourself warm up in the cold country.

Mike: Would you and George be available to talk your anti waterside campaign in front of my good better half. Seems as though, some 40 years ago, I promiced her we would live by the ocean one day. I know your thinking Canada, but Canada's oceans are cold and then there was Jaun.

Right here!! Hugh Mackay has forgot more about Super A"s,130"s, and 140"s than most people ever knew.

Jimmy: I don't know as I'd go that far. I'm not an engine guy, nothing about me likes engines. I like the engine working well, but I'll be the first to turn to an expert on engines. I'll tune them, set timing, adjust valves, etc. but you don't catch me under the head or oil pan.

I never did it until I retired from farming, 175 holsteins came first. Engines got farmed out to experts. I'm gradually learning but still a bit like the musician that's good only at playing the phonograph.

Go to Farmall photo gallery here at YT, type in any of SA, SA1, 100, 130 or 140, you will find just about every owner that has ever been to YT. Most of us are still around, just hungry to discuss these little tractors. Problem is, once one gets the years of neglect fixed up, these little tractors just run and run forever. That neglect factor is mostly what you find wrong with these offsets. Because of their size, they store easily, thus old farts like us usually keep them around until we croak. I know a couple of old guys lived well into their 90s, basically unable to operate the tractor for 20 years, yet they were able to look with some fond memories of using the little tractor.

I know one old guy developed alzheimer's, moved in with daughter and son in law. They had his SA in two car heated garage at the end of the house, and his daughter said that for 10 years the SA was the best sitter she had. He had a big chair, a cot and was quite content to spend his days with the SA. Quite often she had to take his meals to him.

So don't you worry about not enough 140 discussion here at YT, you see we don't have to be fixing all the time like those H, M and other big tractor folks. I once told a guy up near Saginaw MI, (he has a Farmall A) "When man is gone from this earth there will still be an operating Super A around." With that he declared we best contact NASA about taking these offsets along to any new settlements on a new planet.

So don't you fret about 140 expertize, my guess is at any given time, there are probably a dozen offset guys monitoring this site. I was going to say 24-7, but you may encounter a bit of difficulty finding someone between 10pm and 3am.

Hugh, there being a 6 hour time difference (and a few more hours wih Gene B), I promise to provide some emergency or first aid service during the off peak hours ;-) I very well know that you and Gene B are well versed in Farmall offsets, so I could tell posters to wait for your of Gene"s responses.

Well, fortyfanatic indicates your just another old fart like me. Like Nat said Farmalls A, SA, SA1, 100, 130 and 140 are all basically the same tractor, and there is no better site than YT. The tractor was built for 40 years from 1939 to 1979. Most of the up grades happened in the early 1950s, so basically if your discussing late production SA, then SA1, 100, 130 or 140 there is very little difference in them other than sheet metal.

Sir you will not find anymore offset Farmall expertize anywhere than right here at YT. Cub excepted of course.
